ENGLAND v INDIA

At Leeds, May 25

15-Apr-1997
At Leeds, May 25. England won by six wickets. Toss: England.
England rediscovered the habit of winning one-day internationals on a dank day at Headingley. The rain came early this time, forcing the match - in the absence of a reserve day - to be compressed to 42 overs a side, but giving England the chance to assert their superiority over an Indian team who looked thoroughly miserable after suffering a very cold English May. In contrast, the natural optimism of the new England coach David Lloyd seemed to be having its effect on players who only a few months earlier seemed terminally defeatist. Their ebullient fielding provided India with almost as many problems as the seamers' canny use of a helpful pitch. England's batting stuttered and they were in trouble at 23 for three, and again at 68 for four, when Maynard, living up to his reputation, got himself run out on the verge of assuming command. But Thorpe and Stewart made no mistake and England won easily.
Man of the Match: G. P. Thorpe. Attendance: 13,237; receipts £337,176.
