At Leeds, July 16. New Zealand won by 47 runs. England, requiring fewer than 4 runs an over, should not have lost this match. They contrived to do so chiefly by three run-outs, each one equally indefensible by players accustomed to the pressures of one-day cricket. New Zealand's bowling was steady but no more on a pitch which had eased since the morning when the New Zealanders, choosing to bat first, had indeed struggled. Ten overs passed before the first boundary, and when it seemed they were over the worst, Ellison with controlled away-swing took three wickets in twenty balls. Jeff Crowe worked hard for 28 overs, and with Gray batting sensibly, New Zealand mustered 79 from the last thirteen overs. England began steadily, but in the 28th over Gower, driving loosely, was bowled by Coney. There followed errors and no comedy. Lamb, in form, was run out after playing the ball to short third man. Gatting, involved in that indiscretion, tried to repeat the straight 6 off Gray with which he opened his scoring and was bowled by a flighted ball which turned and bounced. Pringle, dropped twice when 1, survived again by turning down Richards's invitation to a 22-yard dash - but Richards could not get back. And finally Ellison, who was looking capable of rescuing England, found in Foster an unwilling run-stealer.
