ENGLAND v PAKISTAN

At Birmingham, August 31

15-Apr-1997
At Birmingham, August 31. England won by 107 runs. Toss: Pakistan. International debut: A. J. Hollioake.
England tied up the series with a crushing victory, and continued to reverse the trend of the Tests by demolishing Pakistan's fast bowlers. Knight and Stewart showed that the Sri Lankan method of kick-starting an innings could work in English conditions after all, racing from 30 to 103 in six overs. Mushtaq Ahmed rediscovered his rhythm well enough to remove both Stewart and Atherton in his first over, but Knight changed tack, steering the ball into gaps to bring up a memorable century, 113 in 132 balls on his county ground. Pakistan's hopes were virtually eliminated by the second over of their innings, when Moin Khan, promoted ill-advisedly above his station, followed Aamir Sohail back to the pavilion with the score just six. Ijaz Ahmed made England wait with a run-a-ball 79, but he was plucked out by Croft, and Hollioake picked up four wickets on his international debut through subtle changes of pace.
Man of the Match: N. V. Knight. Attendance: 19,074; receipts £487,524.
