At Delhi, October 15. England won by five wickets. Toss: England. Accomplished batting by Smith, who added 103 in 23 overs with Lamb, eased England to a comfortable victory in the opening match of the competition. Lamb hit three sixes in his 52, and Russell batted perkily at the end after Stewart and Capel had gone quickly. Sri Lanka, put in, had begun badly. Mahanama was run out second ball, failing to beat Stewart's direct hit side-on from square leg as he came back for a second run, and Kuruppu was well caught off an inside edge. The innings was saved by Aravinda de Silva. Dropped when 10 at slip off Capel, he struck 80 from 90 balls, including ten fours, and put on 72 in sixteen overs with Samarasekera. After he was out at 174, the innings collapsed as DeFreitas took three wickets in four overs.
