At Manchester, June 28. Sri Lanka won by 33 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka. One-day international debut:
A. N. Cook.
Jayawardene reached his second successive hundred, in 83 balls, and added 137 in 20 overs
with Tharanga. Yet arguably Maharoof played the decisive innings. Batting at No. 7, he hit 58 in
50 balls to take Sri Lanka comfortably past 300 again after England, despite losing Collingwood
and Pietersen to their ever-growing injury list, seemed capable of restricting them to something
more manageable. Kabir Ali came in to replace Mahmood, but represented scant improvement.
He sent down a succession of full tosses and his ten overs cost 77 runs, including 20 off the last
of the innings, when Maharoof hit two sixes. England's wide problem also returned, with Harmison
conceding nine. Although Trescothick and Cook made an encouraging start, putting on 77 in 12
overs, neither stayed long enough to give England a real shot at victory.
Man of the Match: D. P. M. D. Jayawardene.
