Free State demolished Griqualand West at Bloemfontein to win by the crushing margin of 202 runs. After scoring 276 for 5, Free State dismissed their opponents for just 74. The Free State batsmen all made useful contributions, with Tienie Fick top-scoring with a career best 57. Of the five Free State wickets to fall, Ryan Pietersen picked up a career best 3 for 51. The Griqua innings never recovered from 4 for 7 as they were bowled out for a paltry 74; only Alan Doherty, with a career-best 27 and Alan Kruger (20) reached double figures. The full house of points awarded to Free State has placed them second in Pool A.
In a low scoring match at Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal beat Western Province by 63 runs after successfully defending a low total of 148. Natal came under pressure from William Hantam who picked figures of 5 for 31 - the best of his career - with his left-arm medium-fast bowling. An impressive debut came from John Geoghegan who picked up 3 for 46 while Mark Sanders top-scored for Natal with 30 at the top of the innings. Saidi Mhlongo then grabbed career-best figures of 5 for 29, to blow away Western Province for 85, ably assisted by Keegan Africa who took 3 for 23. Only two Province batsmen managed to get into double figures with sundries the top scorer on 28.
