INDIA v SRI LANKA

At Calcutta, January 4

15-Apr-1992
At Calcutta, January 4. India won by seven wickets. Toss: India. Azharuddin secured the Asia Cup and the Man of the Match award with an unbeaten 58 in a final postponed for 24 hours and then shortened by rain. The game was also notable for a hat-trick from Kapil Dev, who had Mahanama caught behind off the last ball of an over, and removed Jayasuriya and Ratnayake with the first two balls of his next. Sri Lanka were thus reduced from 176 for five, a score owing much to the 58-run fourth-wicket stand between Gurusinha and Ranatunga (56 balls), to 181 for eight. India lost their openers cheaply, but they were rescued by a third-wicket partnership of 91 from Manjrekar, whose undefeated 71 anchored the innings, and Tendulkar.
Man of the Match: M. Azharuddin.
