Kenya v Pakistan

15-Apr-2005

At Birmingham, September 14, 15. Pakistan won by seven wickets. Pakistan 2 pts. Toss: Pakistan. One-day international debut: M. L. Patel.
An astonishing Kenyan collapse, in which they lost nine wickets for 27 in little more than ten overs, handed Pakistan victory after the weather had threatened to rob them of easy points. No play had been possible on the first day due to persistent rain, and the cloud cover on the reserve day hinted at further hold-ups. When one duly came after 20 overs, there was something close to relief among the predictably small crowd: Kenya had crawled to 64 for one against some listless bowling. But Pakistan re-emerged determined to demonstrate the difference in class, and Kenya tumbled to 94 all out. The unexpected destroyers were the spinners Shoaib Malik and Shahid Afridi, who ruined Kenya's hopes by taking advantage of a skiddy pitch, and batsmen who were leaving too many straight balls. Afridi finished with a career-best five for 11. Pakistan's reply was swift, as Yasir Hameed and Imran Farhat reached 70 in the 13th over.
Man of the Match: Shahid Afridi. Attendance: 4,200.
