Morton scores another double in tame draw

Runako Morton scored his second consecutive double-century - the first such instance in West Indies domestic history since 1966 - in a high-scoring and tame draw to give Leeward Islands first-innings points against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) in Charlestown. Resuming overnight on 173, Morton went on to score 231 in his team's knock of 596. Morton scored 22 fours and four sixes, and faced 403 balls in his 450-minute innings. He added 94 for the sixth wicket with Devon Thomas and useful contributions from Justin Athanaze and Gavin Tonge pushed the score close to 600. Morton reached his double-century with a sweep for four off the offspinner Ryan Austin, before edging the same bowler to Floyd Reifer at slip. Ignored by the national selectors, Morton has certainly made a strong case for a recall for the away series in England next month.

"I would be lying if I told you I did not want to play international cricket but right now my motivation comes from my teammates and doing the best I can for the Leewards," Morton told CMC.

CCC batted out 16 overs and lost the wicket of first-innings double centurion Omar Phillips before rain forced an early finish.

The contest between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago at the Queens Park Oval petered out to a draw with only three innings possible in the match. Guyana batted out 70 overs to reach 213 for 7, with the highlight of the day being Narsingh Deonarine's knock of 74, which included ten fours and a six. Deonarine has had an impressive run this season and is on the verge of breaking a domestic record. He is currently just 24 runs shy of going past Stuart Williams' highest of 974 runs in the first-class season of 2002. The other half-centurion in the Guyana innings was Christopher Barnwell, who scored 57. Sherwin Ganga, Atiba Allert and Imran Khan helped themselves to two wickets each, though the eventual result was inevitable with two innings left to complete on the final day.
