Worcestershire have decided not to renew their contract with Nantie Hayward, who has set his sights on an international recall after opting for county cricket during 2003. The decision opens the way for Andy Bichel to return to the club he represented with great distinction in 2001.
"Hayward has never 100% confirmed he was coming back," said Worcestershire's chief executive, Mark Newton. "The club had to secure its position." His contract had been a one-year deal with the option of another, but Hayward had always been at odds with the United Cricket Board of South Africa over his inavailability for Tests. The recent success of Andre Nel, who has been prevented by the UCB from returning to play for Northants, has encouraged Hayward to push for further international honours.
The club expects to announce Hayward's replacement this week, and Bichel, whose 66 wickets in 2001 compare well with Hayward's 67 last year, is firmly in the running. He has also been linked with Gloucestershire, and has already turned down an offer with Middlesex. Andrew Hall, Hayward's fellow South African, is expected to return for a second season, despite a recent back injury.
