Result of the post-match hearing conducted by ICC match referee Hanumant Singh on 11 January 2002

A hearing was conducted last night (11 January 2002) after the Australia-New Zealand VB Series match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground when Australian player Glenn McGrath was charged with a contravention of the ICC Players and Team Officials Code clause C3 following a report by the on-field umpires.

That clause reads as follows:

"Players and/or Team Officials must at all times accept the umpire's decision and not show dissent at the umpire's decision."

Glenn's explanation in defence of his action was considered during the hearing and not found satisfactory.

Giving due weight to other aspects such as the emotions involved in the situation etc, the match referee's decision is that Glenn will receive a one match suspension with immediate effect, and a two match suspended sentence which runs from 12 January until the end of the current VB Series on 11 February.

As such, if he is found guilty of a further transgression of the Code in that time he will incur that further penalty.

The hearing was also attended by ACB Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland, Australian team manager Steve Bernard, Australian captain Stephen Waugh, Glenn McGrath and on-field umpires Darrell Hair and Bob Parry.
