SRI LANKA v NEW ZEALAND 1983-84

At Colombo Cricket Club, March 24, 25, 26, 28, 29

15-Apr-1985
At Colombo Cricket Club, March 24, 25, 26, 28, 29. New Zealand won by an innings and 61 runs. Hadlee marked his 50th Test appearance with a match-winning haul of ten wickets. He claimed five in each innings, the seventeenth and eighteenth occasions on which he has achieved the feat in his Test career. Sri Lanka's innings was marked by Madugalle's brave 89 in 218 minutes, completed in two parts through his being forced to retire late on the first day when hit behind the left ear by a ball from Hadlee, and for the second time in the series a Sri Lankan record partnership (109 with Ranatunga for the sixth wicket) was brought to an end by injury. New Zealand batted for almost three days in reply for a lead of 203. The left-handed Reid batted for eleven and a half hours for his 180, facing 436 balls and hitting seventeen 4s. Playing for a draw, Sri Lanka were 69 for three at the close of the fourth day but, succumbing to Hadlee's venom, were out shortly after lunch on the fifth, which was Howarth's 33rd birthday.
