West Indies v Australia, Fourth One-Day International

15-Apr-2004
At Port-of-Spain, May 24, 2003. Australia won by 67 runs. Toss: Australia. One-day international debut: R. O. Hurley.

Australia, with their 21st consecutive one-day international victory, wrapped up the seven-match series 4-0. The two main contributors had some good fortune: Gilchrist, after sitting out the previous game, was dropped twice en route to 84, while Clarke, bowled by a Collymore no-ball on 41 and reprieved by Powell at deep mid-wicket on 47, also rode his luck to hit an unbeaten 55 from 40 balls. West Indies were eventually set 287, more than any team had successfully chased at Port-of-Spain, and though they had an outside chance at 146 for three in the 35th over, typically purposeful bowling and suicidal run-outs ensured a comfortable Australian win. One of those runouts saw the end of the debutant, Hurley (first names Ryan O'Neal), without facing a ball. A 27- year-old off-spinning all-rounder from Barbados, he had given up first-class cricket in 2000 only to return for the 2002-03 season with the express intention of playing international cricket.

Man of the Match: A. C. Gilchrist.
