West Indies v England 1997-1998

At Bridgetown, March 29

15-Apr-1999
At Bridgetown, March 29. England won by 16 runs. Toss: West Indies.
Adam Hollioake resumed as England's one-day captain, having been thrust back into office by Atherton's resignation, and won his fifth game in five. His team had only one change from the eleven that triumphed in Sharjah in December: Adam's brother Ben replaced Alistair Brown. Atherton was a forlorn-looking figure in the pavilion. Ben did not bat or bowl, but he did play one vital part - he ran out Lara, when West Indies were well ahead of an asking-rate of nearly six an over, needing 75 from 15. After failing to make a century in the Tests, Lara had scored a dazzling 110 from 106 balls, hitting three sixes and 15 fours, but without him West Indies ran out of wickets. England had relied on a platform of 165 built by Knight and Stewart, who were not separated until the 31st over. Given first use of a good pitch, Knight made 122 from 130 balls, with four sixes and 13 fours; despite Lara's counter-attack, it was enough.
Man of the Match: N. V. Knight.
