India began disappointingly but Umrigar and Borde came to the rescue before Nadkarni shared an eight-wicket stand of 95 in an hour and a half with Engineer and made his highest Test score.
Even so, the West Indies, helped by centuries from McMorris, Khaki and Sobers went ahead with half their wickets standing and were 236 ahead before declaring. McMorris, and Kanhai shared a record second wicket stand of 255. Sobers hit his twelfth Test hundred with four 6's and eleven 4's.
During the third day play was held up for five minutes by a bottle-throwing incident after Solomon was run out. The West Indies struck decisive blows through their pace bowler Hall, who claimed his 100th Test victim while taking six for 49 as India slumped to defeat.
