Bangladesh v England, 2016-17

Wisden's review of the first ODI, Bangladesh v England, 2016-17

15-Apr-2017
At Mirpur, October 7, 2016 (day/night). England won by 21 runs. Toss: England. One-day international debuts: J. T. Ball, B. M. Duckett.
The cricket had been a long time coming, but it was worth the wait. Poised for their third straight one-day win over England, spread across more than five years, Bangladesh contrived to lose their last six for 17 - three to Jake Ball, who returned the best figures on one-day international debut for England. Victory was built on the belligerence of Stokes, who - five years after his first appearance in the format - scored a dazzling maiden century, and Duckett, another debutant, who made a patient but innovative 60. After their fourth-wicket stand of 153, Buttler kicked on in his first ODI as captain, pilfering 63 from 38 balls; like Stokes, he hit four sixes. England's 309 for eight was their highest score in Bangladesh, who needed to pull off their biggest second innings on this ground to win.
For 41 overs, they were cruising. Imrul Kayes made his second century against the tourists in four days, while Shakib Al Hasan was in scintillating touch. At 271 for four, Bangladesh needed 39 from 52 balls. But Stokes, vice-captain and talisman, gathered England together for a pep talk. Ball immediately dismissed Shakib, caught at midwicket for 79 from 55 deliveries, and Mosaddek Hossain, who chopped on for a golden duck. Rashid ripped a leg-break at Mashrafe bin Mortaza, who edged behind, then saw the elegant Kayes coming, and sent it wide of off stump. Buttler pulled off a sharp stumping, and Rashid finished with a career-best four for 49. Appropriately, it was Rashid - with a direct hit from mid-off to account for Shafiul Islam - and Ball who together completed the heist. A crowd of 25,000, so loud for so long, had been silenced.
Man of the Match: J. T. Ball.
