Bangladesh v England, 2016-17
Wisden's review of the first ODI, Bangladesh v England, 2016-17
The cricket had been a long time coming, but it was worth the wait. Poised for their third straight one-day win over England, spread across more than five years, Bangladesh contrived to lose their last six for 17 - three to Jake Ball, who returned the best figures on one-day international debut for England. Victory was built on the belligerence of Stokes, who - five years after his first appearance in the format - scored a dazzling maiden century, and Duckett, another debutant, who made a patient but innovative 60. After their fourth-wicket stand of 153, Buttler kicked on in his first ODI as captain, pilfering 63 from 38 balls; like Stokes, he hit four sixes. England's 309 for eight was their highest score in Bangladesh, who needed to pull off their biggest second innings on this ground to win.
Man of the Match: J. T. Ball.
