Bangladesh v Pakistan

Wisden's review of the eighth Asia Cup match, Bangladesh v Pakistan

15-Apr-2015
At Mirpur, March 4, 2014 (day/night). Pakistan won by three wickets. Pakistan 4pts. Toss: Bangladesh.
Bangladesh recorded their highest one-day total, reduced Pakistan to 225 for five in the 42nd over, and still lost. Pakistan's last-ditch hero was again Shahid Afridi, who raced to an 18-ball half-century - the joint-second-fastest in one-day international history - and finished with 59 from 25. That included seven sixes, three of them in five balls from Shakib Al Hasan, who had been restored after completing a three-match ban for an offensive gesture at a TV camera during a match against Sri Lanka. Afridi could not quite see this one through, and Fawad Alam's departure for 74 from 70 deliveries to the fourth ball of the final over left Umar Akmal to complete victory with a four; it was Pakistan's highest successful one-day run-chase, beating 322 for six against India at Mohali in November 2007. Earlier, Anamul Haque made his second international hundred, and shared an opening stand of 150 with Imrul Kayes to set Bangladesh on the way to surpassing their 320 against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in August 2009. They were helped by a bizarre cameo from Pakistan's leftarm spinner Abdur Rehman, who had been drafted in to allow seamer Junaid Khan to take a breather, but was removed from the attack in the 11th over with figures of 0-0-8-0. Each of the three deliveries he sent down was called a no-ball on height: the first and third were beamers, while the second - a waist-high full toss - had Kayes caught at deep midwicket. Ahmed Shehzad took control of Pakistan's chase with a century of his own, before Afridi and Akmal sealed their place in the final.
Man of the Match: Shahid Afridi.
