At Lord's, June 12 (floodlit). West Indies won by seven wickets. West Indies 2 pts. Toss:
India.
This compelling game proved West Indies could down quality opponents even when
Gayle was not firing on all 12 cylinders. The all-action hero was Bravo, although the early
damage was done by the pace of Edwards, clocked at 93.9mph. Both adopted a relentlessly
short length that flustered the Indian batsmen, Bravo picking up his first wicket courtesy
of an extraordinary sprinting - running would do it no justice - catch by Simmons at
square leg. Dhoni laboured on a relatively grudging pitch, and it needed the genius of
Yuvraj Singh to dig India out of a hole, though he was dropped by Fletcher on 32, the
main blemish in an improved West Indies fielding display. Lord's erupted when Gayle,
after playing out a maiden from Harbhajan Singh, buckled beneath the pressure and top-
edged a steepling catch to short fine leg. That, however, brought in Bravo; singles became
twos as he and Simmons ran hard, and fielders found themselves fetching the ball from
the extra cover boundary after Bravo hit inside-out over the infield. West Indies timed the
chase perfectly, Bravo bringing victory with an elegant six.
