At Harare, November 29, 2003. West Indies won by 72 runs (D/L method). Toss: Zimbabwe. Oneday
international debut: F. H. Edwards.
The real West Indies stood up again, thanks to three magnificent performances. Gayle set the
pace with a fifty of rare power and brilliance - three sixes and seven fours in 34 balls - while
Hinds batted through the innings for his highest one-day score. Then Fidel Edwards unleashed a deadly spell of swing, becoming the first bowler ever to take six wickets on his one-day international
debut. The Zimbabwean bowlers should also have been able to use the humid conditions, which
was why Streak bowled first, but the West Indian openers were the masters. There might have
been a late onslaught too but rain curtailed the innings and amended Zimbabwe's target to 223
off 32 overs. Edwards's first ball was a superb yorker that uprooted Rogers's off stump, and he
ripped through the top order, reducing Zimbabwe to 22 for five by the eighth over. Taibu and
Ervine added 99 to regain some respectability.
Man of the Match: F. H. Edwards.
