Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has been suspended for two ODIs and his team-mates have been fined 40% of their match fees for their slow over-rate in the final of the tri-series against India in Port-of-Spain.

Match referee David Boon handed the suspension after Sri Lanka were found three overs short of their target at the end of the match, after time allowances were taken into consideration. Mathews accepted the suspension which avoided a formal hearing.

In accordance with the ICC Code of Conduct, the captain receives two suspension points and his team-mates are fined 10% of their match fees for each of the first two overs short and 20% for every subsequent over they fail to bowl in the stipulated time. Two suspension points equate to a suspension for one Test or two ODIs.

The suspension means Mathews will miss the first two of the five ODIs against South Africa on July 20 and 23 in Colombo.

Let Mahela or Sanga take over for 2 games instead of tinkering too much with the captaincy as we already have to sort out the team combination to match the experienced proteas.

It is appropriate penalty considering the lack of spirit by SL. It is only a few days ago I mentioned about return of Afridi and positive impact on Pak performance. Many SL fans were making fun comparing the Afridi's recent run rate. But now one can see how Pak are performing with WI and as against the chaos in SL unit

wide-range of strokes that could demolish any bowling attack should bat up in the batting order concentrating only on his batting. The 2 of the seniors have a well-known history of inability to bat under pressure with their risky approach (come-or-go-Chicago style) to batting and the other with very limited strokes have always boosted confidence of opposition bowlers for the last 5-6 years, therefore their places should be given to quality proven promising young players (S'weera's, Amla's, Trott's class)the likes of KhausalS, AngeloPerera, KVithanage,Shehan Jayasuriya, Roshen Silva, Ashen Silva, Gayan Manishan, Sachithra Serasinghe, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis,… that can demolish confidence of any bowling attack (with well controlled stroke play)that can make things easy for batters to follow as the way Arvinda did as a NO 3 batter. The 3 seniors were very average players as middle-order batters about ten years ago though local media try to compare them to BRADMANs and HAMONNDs.

It is J&Ps that should be blamed for this slow over rate, as it was always very difficult for Angelo to maximize the over rate when the Team has been comprised of too many not-so-fast, bowlers of tiny physique and long run-ups. With other disturbances it is not easy for any team to maintain the required asking-rate with this kind of bowling combination. At a time all other countries have employed 2 or more genuine spinners in their teams, the J&Ps have always stick to one spinner (that can't spin or extract bounce off the pitch unless it was conducive to spin)and 2 World Class spinners were asked to carry water for the henchmen thus they (henchmen)could enhance their career records, and then they(J&Ps) have a case to keep them till the next WC.By the way Angelo should limit his bowling to 4-5 overs only, because his bowling action may have an adverse effect on his spine and could be a lost to the Country in the near future. He is the most complete batsman in the side with 2B CNTD

Only the captain and the vice-captain is accountable for the slow over rate. Can anyone imagine the 8th, 9th, 10th or the 11th man pressurizing the seniors to increase over rate?

@NP_NY: Absolutely. That was a real low in the match. The way Sanga & Jaya were arguing with the umpire was abominable. They must have seen on the giant screen that Dhoni did not change his direction at all (as he had not even started to run when he suddenly found Jadeja in his way). Therefore to then appeal for that was shameful. It showed how desperate SL were to win the final that they were ready to do it this way or that way. Being the senior most players in the team at least they should have shown restraint. Even Sreesanth never did something like this.

All the fans criticizing appointing Matthews as Captain must reconsider their statements. Matthews, while he didn't have the best of times captaining Pune, has largely improved, by not only doing an "all rounders" job but setting aggressive field settings, and utilizing the experience of Sanga and Mahela. The decision to bowl Eranga may be criticized as much as it can be, but in the end of the day, he is a future prospect of Sri Lanka, he is a bowler, and a bloody good one too. He bowled superbly beforehand, and all Eranga had to do was bowl 3 near yorkers. Bowling Malinga for the last over, might have left Dhoni chasing 7 runs of 6 balls, instead of 15. On another day, Eranga would have hit those yorkers. With experience, he will improve his death bowling, while his bowling at the initial stages looks to be what SL will need after Malinga/Kula. Looking forward to the SA series. Eranga, Lakmal, and Kula look a very good future attack ( + Malinga if he doesn't retire before 2015 WC)

Please make mahela the captain again n mathews the vice captain sl are a different team under mahela s captaincy

  • NP_NY on July 13, 2013, 8:41 GMT

Instead of taking 40% from everyone they should have just taken Mahela and Sanga's entire match fees. They were the experienced ones and they could have guided Angelo. Instead they wasted so much time arguing with the umpire about Dhoni supposedly obstructing the field.
