Sri Lanka to give injured Murali time

Sri Lanka are going to give Muttiah Muralitharan extra time to try and recover from the groin injury, which ruled him out of the match against Zimbabwe, before dismissing the offspinner from the World Twenty20 altogether. Earlier in the day it sounded as though Muralitharan was already on a plane home, but Kumar Sangakkara wants to give his star man a chance.

"We haven't ruled him out completely," the Sri Lanka captain said after a rain-effected win over Zimbabwe. "We are going to give him a few more days to try and see whether he can get on the park and compete 100% for us."

Muralitharan, who is also the team's vice-captain, was injured during Friday's opening match against New Zealand in Guyana, which Sri Lanka lost by two wickets. "Clinical tests revealed a grade one strain of his right adductor muscle," team physiotherapist Tommy Simsek said in a statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket in Colombo.

Muralitharan had a successful IPL season, part of the Chennai Super Kings squad that eventually won the tournament. However, Sangakkara remains confident that if he can't recover in time for the Super Eight matches that the squad has the depth to cover.

"If not we have Suraj Randiv who has had a very impressive six months in domestic and international cricket," he said. "He's bowled against some of the toughest opponents in the world on flat tracks in India and Bangladesh and he came out right on time.

"He can field brilliantly, handle a bat and more importantly get through his four overs. The cover is there, of course you can't replace Murali - we would love to have him all the time - but we have tried to cover for changes to the team."

Zimbabwe's net run-rate has taken such a hit with the defeat that Sri Lanka and New Zealand are now virtually into the Super Eight stage of the tournament.

@Deepfreezed: do u have anything to say now???

  • KaZsa on May 6, 2010, 14:26 GMT

@deepfreezed: Tell me 2 good bowlers Australia have left out because they have better bowlers? The only Australian bowler who is in good T20 form is Dirk Nannes. Apart from that, none of the bowlers have done anything worth mentioning in T20 cricket. Let's just forget about the best spinner in the world for a minute coz he is injured. Even with him gone, does Australia have bowlers who can at least come close to the performances of Mendis and Malinga. Mendis has one of the most staggering records in T20 internationals. Australia does not have a single good spinner in their playing eleven. Only spinner they have is David Hussey who had a very forgettable IPL. When Angelo Mathews was the out right STAR for Knight Riders. Even Westindies have a better bowling line up which suits the carribien with Polard and Bravo than the Australians. With the old MP hitting good bowling form Lanakans have one of the best bowling outfits in the tourney.

haaa..... U r the real hero.... That damn freaking Medis shold be left out from the team and Muralie and randiv would continue their operations ..... EVEN A SMALL BOY CAN SCORE AGAINST MENDIS (Every 1 does believe that medis is a spin bowler .. but sorry he is a medium pace bowler ... actually he bowls like that )

@ Getthike Dinith D'Silva: Frozen or say deepfreezed, but this time it seems the eggs are already hatched. So why not take chicken into account? Being a cricket lover, one should always appreciate good cricket. On behest of likeliness, Indian team is my fav. team. Then I would like to fav. all asian teams against all other teams. I hope I answered to your queries.

I think Vaas must be recalled alongwith Dilhara and Muthaiah (hope he recovers soon) which will enlighten spark in the pile of ashes for SL.

v'v got loadz of former captains wit tons of experience commenting about sanga's captaincy. Its nice to see to u'll take time off ur busy schedule to comment on SANGA'S CAPTAINCY. stop complainin n support da team. (v lose a match then u complain v win 1 u still compain). Awesum strategy guyz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@deepfreezed..stop comparing us to other countries..we have our own brand of cricket. its ridiculous to say SL does not have a talented line-up when our team can beat any country on any night..they only thing seperating us from the elite 3 is consistency and that lies on the captian. I agree that some of sanga's decisions are mind blowing; just in this tournament 1. v. NZ, he is defending 135 and sets a defensive field that allows for easy singles and in the penultimate over he gives it to welegedara (ECON 11) when Matthews had a wicket maiden and was bowling fire. 2. v. ZIM he took a HUGE risk bowling Malinga when he had 3 qiality spinners avialable..that would have backfired against a better opponent. overall though i think sanga is the right man for the job at this time and is doing more things right than wrong..besides who is gonna replace him? the only one with the mind/skill set to take over such a responsibilty is Angelo Matthews who is wayy to young n relatively unproven still

Jayawardene is a much better captain than sanga. They should bring Jayawardene back. I know sanga and Jayawardene are best friends but they should do what is best for the country.

C'mon, Sri Lankan bowling is a sorry sight. No quality spinners and one quality fast bowler. Randiv is too new hasn't proven anything. If you look at Aus, they have left quality bowlers out because they don't have room.

Other than Jayawardene and sanga, who in Sri team has shown any batting form recently? When you look at other side they have hitters, strokers, sloggers. Sri has strokers and out of form hitters.

they shud bring rangana herath !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he is very usefull n he is a left armer !!!!!!!

I agree with KaZsa... people are giving sangakarra a lot of bad-mouthing and forgetting that he's won us a t20 tournament before and took us to 2nd place last year... As Stuart Law said, Dilshan is just one boundary away from getting back into form and if someone wants to get back into form, jayawardene is the perfect person to bat with because it puts less pressure on him. Vaas may have had a good IPL but last time he played for Sri Lanka batsman played him with no difficulty and at that time everyone was saying "get rid of him" (how quickly people forget) I don't think there is a team in the whole tournament that Sri Lanka can't beat. despite the new zealand game i think that malinga is probably the best fast-bowler in the tournament, jayawardene is in the best of form and dilshan and sanga can turn things around... matthews is a perfect all-rounder and perera is showing promise too... dont write off mendis and randiv cuz i think they will be effective... GO SANGA!!!!

This is ridiculous. A captain who almost defended a meager 135 against a powerhouse new Zealand batting side is called a poor captain. And easily one of the best bowling sides in the world today are called average(You better look at how horrible Aussie bowling side is). A side where Randiv couldn't get a game after bowling so well against an Indian side on pitches where you can just play without any footwork, is called an average bowling side(how funny is that).Lankans have a tremendous depth in batting with strong hitters like Mathews and Thisara coming down the order. They are one of the best equipped sides to win the title this year with a great balance in spin and pace, even without Murali. And Chandimal showing some colors is an added advantage. Even if Dilshan continues his bad patch. I think Sanga has the side to win the title this year. "Deepfried" or "Deepfreezed"...or whatever you are called. You need to watch more matches mate. No offense.
