South Africa's left-arm fast bowler Beuran Hendricks has been ruled out of the ODI series against Zimbabwe after sustaining a back injury while playing for South Africa A in Australia.

Hendricks played five matches for South Africa A in the quadrangular A-team series but missed the first four-day game against Australia A in Townsville last week.

According to CSA, Hendricks has suffered a lumbar strain and has been advised a period of rest and recovery. The board has decided not to send a replacement for Hendricks as the ODI squad already has pacers in Marchant de Lange, Kyle Abbott, Wayne Parnell and the uncapped Mthokozisi Shezi.

South Africa's frontline pace bowlers - Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander - have been rested for the ODI series, which begins on August 17, but will return for the tri-series against Zimbabwe and Australia.

they is nothing special about hendricks all i see is langerveldt 2:0 ....so good ridins......any way shezi hope he lives up to his hype the guy has talent....kyle is a superstar in england they know it clarke knows it yet our selectors i finnally getting it....he and marchant will really do wonders at the death....we have been crying out for death bowlers now for a while so relief for sure to see a good selection...tahir at limited overs i rank him behind ajmal and the windies due but other than that he has proven to be a handful his 10overs are more exciting than steyns in odis that tells u something ...

I thought Beuran was the best of the bunch. Marchant will fetch. Parnell will fetch. Shezi will fetch. Pitch won't assist Abbott so he won't be threatening.

About 2 years ago, albeit in a T20 triangular, Zimbabwe comfortably beat the Proteas twice. That Proteas squad contained Amla as leader, Faf, Duminy, Marchant&Parnell. Squad was strengthened after Faf had disappointed leading that side in the List A series before that but it clearly didn't help: http://www.espncricinfo.com/zimbabwe-tri-series-2012/engine/series/561548.html

In the List A Tri Series ZIM had left out Taylor, Masakadza, Sibanda, Price, Utseya plus Cremer(who like Tahir is rubbish at Tests, but gold dust in LOIs). While the Proteas won, they never convinced. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/series/565849.html

With all of this in mind, plus looking at the Proteas squad, I think they weakened the department(bowling) that disappointed before. Unless Amla&AB are top form, these 3 games might be closer than the Test!

Such a pity. This ODI series would have provided good experience. Shezi and Rillee should be in the team now.

Real shame. He did well in the T20s for SA. I think he will become a very valuable member of the ODI squad.
