Jermaine Blackwood

An aggressive batter from Jamaica, Jermaine Blackwood broke into the West Indies Test squad in June 2014, during the home series against New Zealand, off the back of a table-topping 611 runs in the previous season's Regional Four-Day Competition.

Blackwood replaced Marlon Samuels after West Indies lost the first Test in Jamaica. If there were any doubts about the kind of cricket Blackwood was going to play, he laid them to rest with his second scoring shot - a six over long-on off Trent Boult. Blackwood went on to score 63 runs but was left out in the next Test.

He scored his first Test century in 2015, during England's tour of the Caribbean - an innings whose maturity stood in contrast to the rest of the line-up. He also made 85 and an unbeaten 47 in Bridgetown two Tests on.

Five years later came a match-winning 95 in Southampton, guiding his team to a 1-0 lead in England. His 104 against New Zealand in Hamilton in the next series came in vain, in an innings defeat. He had to wait another two years to bring up his third Test century, once more against England, in Barbados in 2022 - an innings that showed he could temper his attacking instincts and knuckle down to dulling a bowling attack.

Blackwood's inability to marry his flair with consistency cost him his place in the Test side in 2023 after he went 20 innings without a hundred, and he lost his domestic captaincy as well.
