Nigeria win North West African Championships

Nigeria have won the second North West African Championships following a narrow one-wicket win over their arch-rivals, Sierra Leone, in the final match of the five-nation tournament in Lagos on Thursday.

Endurance Ofem, named Player of the Series, guided Nigeria home with 39 as Nigeria overhauled Sierra Leone's 142, despite Lansana Lamin's 4 for 20 from his 10 overs. Ofem also scored the tournament's only century.

Hopes the tournament will expand past its British Commonwealth roots were dashed for this year by the withdrawal of Cameroon and Morocco. Eventually it is intended to include Egypt and Libya.

It was a typical tournament of West African national teams with the usual finishing order of Nigeria first, Sierra Leone second, Ghana finishing third and Gambia fourth.

Hot on the heels of their new Twenty20 competition, Bermuda have launched a new tournament: Five-Five.

The six-a-side tournament is modelled on the famous Hong Kong sixes and will feature eight teams - St. David's, St. George's, Flatt's, Bailey's Bay, Cleveland, PHC, Devonshire Rec and Social Club.

There will be two groups of four competing in a round robin format, semi-finals and a final all played in a single day - April 19.

"This is the ultimate in entertainment," said Cann who hopes to make the tournament an annual event, with every team in Bermuda ultimately involved.

New Zealand Cricket has announced the winners of the first Development Awards which recognise the efforts of volunteers in school and club cricket.

Bryan Scott, of Hinuera Cricket Club, Matamata, Northern Districts, won the Best Club Cricket Initiative, while the Best Women's Cricket Initiative was snapped up by Peter Hensman (Havelock North, Hawke’s Bay – Central Districts).

David Ferguson, from Westlake Boys' High School in Auckland picked up the Best Youth Cricket Initiative, with the Best Junior Cricket Initiative picked up by Peter Burke of Burnside West University Cricket Club in Christchurch.

The Spirit of Cricket Award went to Bob Pratt of Westport, Buller Cricket in Canterbury.

Argentina's North v South match

The annual three-day match, the highlight of Argentine cricket which has been played for many years, was rained out on two consecutive weekends so the captains decided to play a 50-over friendly game.

The South won the toss and sent the North in. On a very tricky wicket the North struggled to close their 50 overs on 155 for 9 with Gary Savage a well-played 40 not out. The South passed their target for the loss of six wickets in the 34th over. A. Buurman (48) and C. Gibson (34) top scored.

Canadian Cricket Association has finally had its name officially changed to Cricket Canada. The board announced the move last year, but has now received approval from the Minister of Industry and the Director, Corporations Canada.

Nicaragua acted as hosts for the first tri-nation tournament with visitors El Salvador and Costa Rica, who emerged winners. It was El Salvador’s second international tournament after their encouraging participation in the C.A. Championship last November and the first time in a long while (possibly ever) that Nicaragua, who came third, participated in an international cricket event. All teams hope this will be the first of many Easter Cups.

Cricket is gaining momentum in Central America and it will be tournaments like this that pave the way for further growth.

Brazil feel the benefit

Following on the heels of the ICC becoming an IOC recognized federation, the Brazilian Cricket Association has now been officially recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Sport, which opens the door to a number of important support programs.

The Association’s corporate sponsors are now eligible for a 1% tax rebate, while individuals can receive a 6% rebate on their financial support. They have also enrolled three Brazilian players to receive Athlete’s grants – Rudyard Hartmann from the men’s team, Juliana Britto and Erika Reinehr of the women’s team, who will each receive over US $400 a month for the next year to help with their training expenses.

It also means Brail will now have three paid Development Officers. While a number of people joined forces to apply for this government recognition, everyone in the Brazilian Cricket Association wishes to thank our President, Ian Webster, for overseeing the entire process. In other news, league play in Brazil is taking a break due to the rainy season, but the season is underway in Sao Paulo and at the HSBC ground in Curitiba, where Gralha Azul (N.Baldwin 75) won its opening T20 match by 53 runs over Swadisht.

The Bermuda Cricket Board is to launch a new Twenty20 competition, with the island divided into four zones consisting of four teams each. The winners in each area will then proceed into semi-finals.

"We're looking to start the Twenty20 on April 26, with the semi-finals on May 4, and final and plate final on May 10," BCB vice-president Allen Richardson told the Royal Gazette.

Suriname stun dire Bahamas

Suriname provided a major upset on the final day of the ICC Americas Division 2 Championship, not only beating odds-on favourites Bahamas but also leapfrogging them to the title and promotion to Division One.

On the eve of the match, we wrote that “Suriname will need an extraordinarily comprehensive win to have any chance of overtaking the Bahamas”, and that’s just what happened. Needing only 83 to avoid being pipped to the title on net run rate, Bahamas were utterly woeful as they crashed to 57 all out and a thumping 146-run defeat.
