The Asian Cricket Council reports that Qatar’s win in the Under-15 Challenge Cup in December has led to a boom in interest in cricket. Qatar’s prime minister was quoted as saying that the government is actively promoting sports activities in the country and promised to provide a cricket ground with facilities to the Qatar Cricket Association.
"Work on the cricket stadium will begin soon,” the secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Council said. “It’s the dream of the Emir of Qatar to provide recreational facilities for all communities based here in Qatar. As cricket is loved by Asians, it is one way of returning back the services rendered by the Asian countries in developing Qatar.”

The tenth ICC European Indoor Championship take place this weekend in Kuortane, Finland. This will be the first tournament to take place in Finland and Kuortane will become the most northerly venue ever to be used for an official international cricket championship.
Originally held every year, the European Indoor Championship has now become a biennial event. The 2006 tournament was held at Lord's and was won by Denmark, who were victors in three of the last four championships. The only other winner in that period was Hellas (Greece), who defeated Denmark by 3 runs in the 2005 final in Herning, Denmark.

There was a major upheaval in Ugandan cricket when William Kibuuka Musoke was ousted as chairman of the UCA by Dr Kato Sebbaale at a feisty meeting in Lugogo.
Musoke has been a controversial figure and it was obvious from early on that he was in trouble, as a succession of speakers lined up to attack his tenure. "We have struggled with this game for long,” said John Naganda, who opposed Musoke’s re-election. “Seeing someone destroy it hurts. Those who are anti-cricket should go to hell," He also moved a motion to suspend discussing the accounts because they were received late.
The UCA was also attacked by Jasper Aligawesa, the general secretary of the National Council of Sports. "You must improve UCA's public image,” he said. “You should also bring an end to divisions in cricket."
When it came to the vote, Musoke and his committee were sent packing. Kampala’s New Vision described him as possessing an ability “to divide all that stood before him”.

While European cricket, outside some die-hards in the southern regions, is in its winter hibernation, The Times reports that there is one festival celebrating. For in St Moritz it is the 20th anniversary of Cricket On Ice.
The British are credited with bringing most of the sport and tourism to St Moritz and, inadvertently, one distinguished Brit is responsible for the dottiest activity of all.
In 1988, David Gower - soon to be made England captain for a second time - played here in an inaugural game on the lake. It was a marketing ploy, a picture opportunity, but Gower characteristically provided more publicity than planned by sinking his car on a thin patch of ice. They talk about it to this day.

The USA Cricket Association elections are on hold, although this does not appear to have been conveyed to those involved in the process.
Chris Dehring, the independent third party appointed by the ICC to try to find a resolution to the ongoing struggle for control of the USACA, managed to get a new constitution approved but the elections that were meant to follow within 30 days have already become embroiled in controversy.
It is believed that Dehring will appoint an external independent auditor to oversee the elections and this means that they not take place until March at the earliest.
Since the announcement of the yes vote for the new constitution, the USACA has yet again not uttered a word in public. Some regions have held their elections while others appear to be uncertain how to proceed.
