Although Don Lockerbie, the USA Cricket Association's CEO, has outlined ambitious plans for the game in the country, some locals in Florida are less than impressed that the USA's first purpose-built stadium has yet to stage a major match, more than two years after it was opened.
The construction of the ground at Broward County in Lauderhill was never universally welcomed, and many locals expressed concern at a bill running into tens of millions of dollars. At the time, they were assured it was the first step in bringing big-time cricket to the USA, and the ICC sanctioned it as the first international-standard venue in the country. Up to now, however, all it has hosted are a handful of minor matches, but is often empty as few can afford the significant hiring fees asked for.
The 5000-seater stadium - it can be expanded to accommodate 20,000 with temporary stands - is proving a white elephant, and it is believed to have lost more than US$1m in its last financial year.
"We understand that there will be commentary and a lot of frustration by the stakeholders who feel that the stadium hasn't seen its fair share of international cricket," Lockerbie told the Florida-based Sentinel newspaper. "The point is, the United States itself has not been the powerhouse of cricket."

Afghanistan allrounder, Raees Ahmadzai, has said his team's batsmen are looking forward to their debut in the Intercontinental Cup, against Zimbabwe A, starting in Mutare today. The team recently had a 10-day training camp in Kabul, which included a three-day game and two two-day games as part of their preparations for their foray into multi-day cricket at the ICC level.
"Some of the players made hundreds, so we will hopefully do some good in Zimbabwe in the four-day match," Ahmadzai told Cricinfo. He said the team had been busy playing club cricket in Afghanistan and "everyone is in good form."
Afghanistan qualified for the Intercontinental Cup, the ICC's multi-day format competition for its Associate and Affiliate members after finishing fifth in the World Cup Qualifiers in South Africa in April.

Canada and Kenya will both be seeking their first victories of their Intercontinental Cup campaigns when the tournament resumes in King City on Friday. Kenya are currently bottom of the table after a draw against Ireland, while Canada are in fourth having lost and drawn their first two matches.

Botswana will complete their preparations for this month's ICC World Cricket League Division 6 tournament with a short camp in Sri Lanka.
The southern Africans will play three matches in Sri Lanka during a five-day training camp before leaving for Singapore.
These matches will be on top of games played in the Botswanan capital, Gaberones, against South African provincial team, North West Dragons and club team, Ladium Cavaliers. The matches this weekend against the Cavaliers will be the final games at home ahead of the team's departure for Sri Lanka on August 19.

In just their second Americas Region competition Bahamas Under-15s proved too powerful for the Cayman Islands and Belize as they ended the Central Division tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.
Cayman Islands captured the silver defeating Belize, the newcomers, twice.
Turan Brown (Bahamas) was declared Player of the Tournament.

David Hemp has been named Bermuda captain for this month's series against Uganda. He was widely expected to take over from Irving Romaine, who led the side during the dismal campaign in the World Cup qualifiers in April. Steven Outerbridge, 26, was made vice-captain of the 13-man squad announced on Sunday.

The Fiji Blues, the men’s national cricket team, has been selected for this year’s East Asia Pacific Cricket Trophy. The squad includes a number of changes from the team that competed for the Stafford-Knight Trophy series in Vanuatu in May.
Greg Browne, Josefa Rika and Australian based Seci Tuiwai join the squad along with Seru Tupou, who impressed at the Under-19 East Asia Pacific Cricket tournament. Kida Jikoivanualevu and Taniela Waqa have also been added to the team.
“We have used this tournament as an opportunity to have a look at some of the players in international competition prior to our important World Cricket League competition in Nepal in January next year,” Cricket Fiji’s High Performance Manager, Stephen Jenkin said.

A number of important Associate and Affiliate dates have been confirmed by the ICC this past week.
The ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier will take place in the United Arab Emirates from February 9-13, 2010. This eight-team event featuring Associate and Affiliate sides vying for the two places on offer at the ICC World Twenty20 2010 in the West Indies will be played entirely at Dubai Sports City.
September sees the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers take place in Canada. The event runs from September 1 to 13 in Toronto with 10 teams competing for the six remaining places for the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand from January 16-30, 2010.
The ICC World Cricket League Division 6 (WCL Div.6) will be held in Singapore from August 29 to September 5 with teams from Singapore, Guernsey, Malaysia, Bahrain, Botswana and Norway battling it out in one group across three venues: Kalang, Singapore CC and Indian Association. The top two teams from WCL Div. 6 will win promotion to Division 5.
