Shane Warne will make his first appearance of the county season for Hampshire, on Monday, in the C&G Trophy against Essex. Most of the Australians are enjoying a break before next winter's Ashes and World Cup campaigns but not for Warne. Hampshire will be delighted to have him around after slipping to defeat against Sussex in the Championship this week.

If losing by an innings against Essex wasn't bad enough for Robert Croft and his Glamorgan team, they have also been docked half a point for their slow over rate. It won't have helped that they were fetching the ball from the boundary with great regularity.

O'Brien reprimanded for outburst

The ECB has confirmed that Niall O'Brien, the Kent wicketkeeper, has received a reprimand under the ECB's discipline code following an incident during Kent's County Championship match against Durham on 19-23 April.

O'Brien was reported by the umpires, Peter Willey and Allan Jones, for a level one breach of the code, which involves using language that is obscene, offensive or insulting.

The penalty remains on O'Brien's record for a period of two years. Any further level one breach during that period will result in an automatic three penalty points.

The Trustees of the Walter Lawrence Trophy have announced that a new award is to be made to the highest-scoring batsman from the six MCC Universities.

The Trustees of the Walter Lawrence Trophy have announced that a new award is to be made to the highest-scoring batsman from the six MCC Universities.

The University Centres of Cricketing Excellence (UCCE) programme comprises six teams, Durham, Cambridge, Oxford, Loughborough, Leeds/Bradford and Cardiff, and is in its second year under the administration of MCC, who took over its running with enormous success from the ECB at the start of last season. The award will be presented to the batsman with the highest score in an innings, played against one of the other five UCCEs or against one of the first-class counties. The winner will receive a silver medallion and prize of £1,000, to be presented at the end-of-season dinner at Lord

Sussex begin their C&G campaign on Sunday, April 30 when they play Surrey at The Oval. They play Middlesex the following day, Monday, May 1, at Hove. Both games start at 10.45am. On the Bank Holiday Monday the day has been called "Fans and Family Day" with discounted tickets for everyone at Hove. Those attending wearing a sporting shirt will gain entrance for just £5 while all Under 16s will get in free.

Charlie Shreck ripped through Durham University to take finish with the extraordinary figures of 5 for 6. Durham crumbled to 46 all out, but that only tells half the story. At one stage they'd been a relatively comfortable 28 for 1, so they contrived to lose 9 for 18. Detention all round.
