Spearman, Hardinges and Lewis star in thriller

A round-up from the latest Friends Provident Trophy matches

North Division

Yorkshire, at least, will be relieved at the rain that brought their match at Derby to an untimely conclusion in the 22nd over, John Ward writes. The Derbyshire seamers had put their team well in the ascendancy, on course for another victory, but in the end it was the weather that had the last word.
Yorkshire were put in to bat on a greenish pitch in a damp atmosphere, and were in trouble right from the start. Charl Langeveldt quickly found the conditions to his liking, whipping out Craig White, caught at slip for 1, and Anthony McGrath, caught at the wicket for 0; 6 for 2. Andrew Gale (11) chipped Graham Wagg low to mid-on to make it 23 for 3.
Jacques Rudolph got his head down and fought it out, but Adam Lyth ignored the conditions and played some handsome drives, most notably a cover drive that was through the fielder before he could react effectively. His 18, a little cameo, came to a cruel end: he was hit a crippling blow in the box, and when he eventually decided he was fit to face up again, he was immediately bowled by a beauty from Tom Lungley.

West Indies will need the best fourth-innings chase at Sabina Park after Andrew Symonds rescued Australia from their worst opening to a Test innings in 72 years to set the home side 287 for a final-day victory. When bad light stopped play West Indies had made a solid start in their challenging task, reaching 46 for 1 with Devon Smith on 19 and Ramnaresh Sarwan on 8.
Australia wanted more than one early breakthrough but it took all of Stuart Clark's efforts to finally remove Brenton Parchment for 15. Clark peppered the stumps and Parchment's technique of walking across and trying to work almost everything to leg had him rapped on the pads for three excruciatingly close lbw shouts. Clark had his revenge when he moved one away from Parchment, who edged behind to leave West Indies at 22 for 1.

The Kolkata Knight Riders' final game of the season provided Sourav Ganguly and his team a chance to redeem themselves in front of their home fans. An insipid performance in the field and for three-fourths of the chase suggested the campaign would end on a low note but, after Umar Gul sparked life into the chase, Ganguly did the rest to upset Kings XI Punjab's winning momentum ahead of the knockout stages.
After 15 overs, Kolkata were stumbling at 104 for 5, needing an improbable 71 more. Two runs and three balls later they lost Aakash Chopra and in walked Umar Gul, who had taken 4 for 23. After playing the first ball from James Hopes back to the bowler, he proceeded to smash the next two for six - he connected the first in the nick of time for a pull and the ball surprisingly sailed into the stands, the second was sent over long-on.

England face tall ask as spinners dominate

Sixteen wickets fell on the third, enthralling day of the second Test at Old Trafford as New Zealand set England a daunting 294 to win, on a crumbling pitch. It was a spinner's day, with five-wicket hauls for Daniel Vettori and Monty Panesar, and both sides suffered horrendous collapses as the advantage swung back and forth between the two sides.
England progressed with relative ease to 76 for 1 by stumps in a performance far improved on their calamitous effort of the morning, in which their middle-order was routed by Vettori. The relative comfort with which Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss batted was more due to the New Zealanders' ill-discipline, which was, in itself, a surprise given their earlier excellence. Perhaps, as one commentator suggested, they had begun to question their belief when the favourites tag was draped around their necks mid-afternoon. England should not be allowed to win, but began to believe the unlikely was possible.

The home jinx for Deccan Chargers continued, as Bangalore Royal Challengers powered to a five-wicket win to register their fourth win of the IPL and assure themselves of seventh place. Set a modest target of 166, Bangalore started slowly, but cameos from Misbah-ul-Haq, Rahul Dravid, Cameron White and B Akhil ensured they got home with one over to spare.
Deccan began strongly, but had only themselves to blame for frittering away an outstanding start: Herschelle Gibbs and Adam Gilchrist added 101 in just 11.2 overs, but from there it went rapidly downhill, as they lost nine for 56 in eight overs to slump to 165, after threatening 200 at one stage.

Second Division

The division's closest match was played out
at Chelmsford where, try as they might, Leicestershire just couldn't consign Essex to defeat despite having them nine down. Ravi Bopara's 87 and James Foster's unbeaten 88 from 212 balls held them together long enough to cling on for the draw. After the tumble of wickets on the first day, the draw was the least expected result, but the pitch flattened out considerably and was taking a lot of turn on the final day, as evidenced by Claude Henderson's figures of 4 for 68. Even so, it took some determined efforts from Essex who were seven down at tea. But Foster played out the last over from Dillon du Preez, well-supported by David Masters (5 off 87 balls) and Tony Palladino (2 off 53 balls) before Danish Kaneria survived the last eleven minutes with his senior partner. Kaneria offered a chance, spooning Henderson to mid-off but the ball evaded Garnett Kruger's high dive to his right.
Northamptonshire spared Glamorgan no mercy in notching their first win of the season, an emphatic affair at Swansea. Glamorgan followed on 256 behind and were soon in the soup at 5 for 21 as Northamptonshire's opening pair David Lucas and Johan van der Wath scythed the top five down for single figures. Mark Wallace, James Harris and Robert Croft painstakingly rebuilt as they each reached double figures, the only batsmen to do so this innings. But they were only staving off the inevitable and Andrew Hall nipped in with three to do the rest mid-afternoon. Although rain wiped out much of the second day, there was still enough time for the visitors to complete the job.
Warwickshire and Middlesex ended with a predictable draw at Edgbaston, after four batsmen contributed fifties for the visitors. Billy Godleman moved on to 87, Owais Shah converted his overnight 46 to 50, then Eoin Morgan and Shaun Udal batted into the evening as Middlesex built an insurmountable lead.

Gutsy Chanderpaul sparks fiery West Indies

After being hit on the head, Shivnarine Chanderpaul went on to score 118 before his bowlers reduced Australia to 17 for 4 at stumps

There are moments that can turn a Test match on its head, and the exact time when it occurred at Sabina Park was when Shivnarine Chanderpaul was struck on his. Chanderpaul copped a sickening blow to the back of his helmet from a Brett Lee bouncer, but despite apparently being knocked out by the hit, he got up, scored a century, and sparked a remarkable fightback from West Indies. The momentum carried into their bowling effort as Fidel Edwards and Daren Powell rattled the Australia top order like few Caribbean bowlers have since the early 1990s, reducing the visitors to 17 for 4 at stumps, and the match was suddenly burst wide open.
Australia ended the day with a lead of 136, with Mitchell Johnson on 4 and Brad Hodge yet to score. They were still in the stronger position but their grip had loosened considerably thanks to Powell and Edwards. Fast, swinging deliveries did for all of Australia's top four, none of whom reached double figures.

Dinesh Karthik and the Delhi Daredevils' misfiring middle order came good when it mattered to clinch a thrilling five-wicket victory and keep their semi-finals hopes alive. Coming in with the team wobbling at 89 for 4, Karthik blitzed a classy 32-ball 56 to take Delhi past the Mumbai Indians' 176 with one ball to spare.
Mumbai are three points behind Delhi and two behind the Chennai Super Kings, who have a game against the lowly Deccan Chargers, and may need to win both their remaining matches, including a tough one away against table-topping Rajasthan Royals, to make it to the final four.
