Rohtak: Devastating bowling by medium pacer Joginder Sharma helped
Haryana to beat Himachal Pradesh by an innings and 21 runs on the
second day of the Vijay Merchant cricket tournament here on Monday.
Batting first after winning the toss, Himachal Pradesh was in deep
trouble from the very start of the innings. Opener Subash was bowled
by skipper Joginder Sharma when the batsman had scored only one
run. His opening partner Ramnik was also dismissed cheaply. He could
score only 10 runs. Only Pankaj Thakur who batted three hours played a
defiant knock of 44 in 134 balls. The innings folded at 115. Joginder
Sharma bagged 6 wickets for 38 runs.
Haryana also started in the same fashion losing opener Kuldeep Diwan
for a duck. At 61, Haryana had lost five wickets at draw of stumps on
the opening day. But Haryana's lower order batsmen fought back on the
second day to carry the total to 215. Dharmender contributed 46 with
the help of seven boundaries whereas skipper Joginder Sharma scored
35. Haryana gained a lead of 100 runs. For Himachal Pradesh, Sachin
Rana and Pankaj Thakur took 4 and 3 wickets respectively.
The Himachal batsmen surrendered without resistence in the second
knock. It was Joginder Sharma once again who spread havoc right from
the word go. He struck in the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 9th overs of the
innings to have the visitors reeling at 12 for 4. The innings folded
at 79. Joginder captured 6 wickets at the cost of 29 runs while
Kuldeep Diwan bagged 4 for 13.

Bihar took a stranglehold of their Cooch Behar quarter final match against Tamil Nadu at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur today. Gaining the first innings lead after recovering from a precarious situation, they were in a position to press for an outright victory.
Replying to TN's 188, Bihar (overnight 62-4) slipped to 97-6 before Aamir Hashmi proceeded to rescue the innings with two valuable partnerships. He added 55 for the 7th wicket with keeper MS Dhoni (40) and then a match turning 118 for the 8th wicket with captain Vikash Kumar (65). Hashmi was last out for 94 in the 121st over as Bihar totalled 299, a healthy lead of 111. Vidyuth Sivaramakrishnan who top scored with 60 for TN was in the thick of the action again, picking up the last five wickets to finish with 5-75 in 31.2 overs.
TN lost the wicket of Vikram Kumar for 8 in their second essay and finished the day at 26-1 off 7 overs, still 85 behind. V Kudawla on 13 and R Prasanna on 5 were holding the fort.

India on Sunday completed their first victory of their 1999/2000
Australian tour, defeating New South Wales by 93 runs this
afternoon. The final three wickets fell in 27 minutes after the tea
adjournment.
Under overcast and humid conditions, NSW batted slowly through the
pre-lunch session on the final day. Needing 222 today to win, the
Blues scored just 42 runs in two hours for the loss of one wicket,
going to lunch at 106 for two. Though a batting lineup capable of 180
in four hours was still in the pavilion, it was obvious it would
require a major change in attitude from what was on display in the
morning.
Nightwatchman Gavin Robertson (10) added two runs to his overnight
score before being trapped lbw not playing a shot by a Srinath
delivery which nipped in slightly from the off. Umpire Simon Taufel,
who had been the genesis of much Indian angst in the final overs
yesterday, gave the decision and NSW were 80 for two.
Greg Hayne brought his maiden first-class half-century from his 85th
delivery, achieved from 84 runs scored by his side.

first-class half century as the visitors continued to dominate their
Super Eights A Section match against Northerns yesterday.
A far more organised and professional looking-side since their last
visit to SuperSport Park a year ago, Boland were seven-three ahead in
the bonus points race on day two of the opening round of the series.
With day one all but washed out and the need to establish some sort of
batting mastery, Ontong led from the front to score a career best 78
as the visitors reached 253 for seven when bad light forced an early
closure.
With Steve Palframan his partner, Ontong held firm against some
hostile bowling from Greg Smith, Steve Elworthy and David Townsend
during an impressive batting performance which added 161 runs to help
Boland out of trouble after being a beleaguered 79 for five.

their four-day match against the English tourists at Kingsmead on
Friday, with John Kent and Ross Veenstra keeping them afloat when play
was called off at 3.30 pm.
With rain delaying the start of play by an hour and Natal fielding an
under-strength side, the few fans that braved a murky Kingsmead did
not have much to enthuse about. The highlight of the day was the
74-run fourth-wicket partnership either side of lunch between captain
and Test hopeful Dale Benkenstein and the highly promising former SA
under-19 star, Kent.
With Andy Caddick producing the same quality bowling that went cruelly
unrewarded in the first Test, England were always in control, although
the stand between Benkenstein and Kent, which came off just 124 balls,
threatened to change that.
Benkenstein, after a shaky start, had gone fluently to 45 before the
erratic Alex Tudor won an lbw decision from umpire Wilf Diedericks
when he cut a short delivery back into the home captain's pads. It was
left to the 20-year-old Kent to soldier on to the close, reaching his
50 two balls before an early tea, from which the players never
returned, was taken.

West Indies were 266-3 at the end of the first day of three playing New
Zealand A in the opening first class fixture of their tour. The game is
being played at Owen Delaney Park Taupo, perhaps the only first class ground
in the world with a snow capped, active volcano as part of the skyline.
The highlight of the day was an unbroken partnership of 111 between
Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ricardo Powell which combined vintage Caribbean
strokeplay with a circumspection often absent from recent performances.
The West Indians chose to omit three players who seem certain of a place in
the first test which begins in Hamilton in eleven days time. Captain Brian
Lara, opener Sherwin Campbell and fast bowler Franklyn Rose were left out of
a starting XI picked with a view to giving fringe players a chance to stake
their claim.
New Zealand A made one change from the team that played England A in
Christchurch, dropping medium pace allrounder Wayne Wisneski in favour of
leg spinner Brooke Walker.

In a three day quarter final of the Cooch Behar Trophy at the Telco Club Ground in Jamshedpur, Punjab were 53-1 at stumps after having dismissed Orissa for 250 in 70.2 overs. The Orissa innings was founded upon a 85 run 4th wicket stand between Baliar Singh (55) and Nilanjan Behera (71). S Mohanty was unbeaten on 42 after leading a tailend rally that produced 71 runs for the last two wickets. For Punjab, Sandeep Sanwal was the most successful bowler with 4-85. After losing opener Manish Sharma for 4 in the 7th over, RS Ricky (16 not out) and captain Yuvraj Singh (21 not out), who scored a century in the Ranji Trophy this season against Haryana, took Punjab safely through to stumps.

The first two quarter finals of the state level Cooch Behar Trophy for Under 19 cricketers began in Jamshedpur today. At the Keenan Stadium, Tamil Nadu, after being bowled out for 188 in the 58th over, hit back by capturing four Bihar wickets for 62 runs. After winning the toss and batting, Tamil Nadu failed to combat the wiles of left arm spinner Ajay Yadav who took 5-47 in 15 overs. The lone batsman to show resistance was captain Vidyuth Sivaramakrishnan. The 18 year old left hander who made his Ranji debut this season hit 60 in 74 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes. Tamil Nadu then put the skids on Bihar with off spinner Tanseer Jabbar picking up 2-10 in seven overs. At stumps Bihar were 62-4 after 33 overs with A Hashmi on 17 and Satendra Mishra on 3.

leader.
What we had was a belly landing after attempting to scramble what was
dodgy single and then looking up at umpire Cyril Mitchley signalling
he had been run out. The result was McKenzie being one of four
Northerns wickets to fall in a truncated first session as they put
only 55 runs on the board.
Not at all a great start to the Super Eights in the SuperSport Series
as the tougher part of the first-class domestic programme began at
home on a decidedly damp, chilly afternoon more in keeping with
England in May than sunny South Africa in December.
McKenzie had been looking good too, and from all accounts, would
decided to bat first anyway had he won the toss. Boland?s skipper
Louis Koen got the call right instead and decided, with so much cloud
cover around and a touch of moisture on the pitch, the best option was
to bowl first.

An entertaining final day is in store at the Sydney Cricket Ground on
Sunday, with New South Wales needing 222 to defeat the touring Indians
with nine wickets in hand.
Saurav Ganguly and Ajit Agarkar were the stars of the third day
Saturday as India made 331 in their second innings, a vast improvement
on their uninspiring first innings total of 185 on Thursday.
Given the challenging target of 286 to win from 109 overs, the Blues
were 64 for one at stumps.
Beginning the third day on 110 for two in their second innings in
cooler conditions than had been experienced in the past two days,
India lost three wickets in the morning session.
