South Africa complete hard-fought win

South Africa took 10.5 overs to knock off the 27 runs needed to clinch a hard-fought five-wicket in the first Test in Mirpur

And so the drought continues. More than seven years after they were granted Test status, and in their 44th match against non-Zimbabwean opposition, Bangladesh slipped up yet again, squandering the advantages gained on the second day to subside to a five-wicket defeat on the fourth morning. It took South Africa 10.5 overs to knock off the 27 needed, but the result was never in doubt after Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla and Ashwell Prince had built on a superb spell from Jacques Kallis.
Prince, who played a couple of pleasing drives off Shahadat Hossain, was unlucky not to be there at the end, given out leg before though the delivery from Shahadat pitched outside the line of leg stump. Aleem Dar gave it, but there was to be no final twist in this tale.

Trinidad and Tobago, led by a four-wicket haul from Dave Mohammed, cruised to a nine-wicket win over Jamaica with 64 balls to spare to claim the $1 million jackpot in the second edition of the Stanford 20/20.
The final was a rather one-sided affair as a strangely subdued Jamaica never posted anything like enough runs to trouble a strong Trinidad team, and an already shaky innings was utterly undone by a spectacular collapse in which their last five wickets fell inside eight balls.
Put in to bat, they lost Shaun Findlay to the second ball when he fished at a delivery from seamer Rayad Emrit and was caught by Denesh Ramdin. Xavier Marshall and Marlon Samuels made steady progress but grew increasingly becalmed. Marshall dragged a delivery from legspinner Samuel Badree, who was opening the bowling, onto his stumps and five balls later, Samuels' attempted heave off Dwayne Bravo only resulted in an easy catch to Lendl Simmons at long-on.

Sohail Tanvir, the Pakistan left-arm bowler, scored his third first-class century, and then picked up three wickets as Baluchistan were routed for 132 - same as Tanvir's score - handing Federal Areas a massive win by an innings and 212 runs.
In Karachi, Federal Areas took 33 overs to push their overnight score of 441 for 7 to 597 for 8, and then required three deliveries less than 33 overs to bowl out Baluchistan. For Baluchistan, new-ball bowlers Abdur Rauf and Kamran Hussain didn't take the field and were out 'absent hurt' in their side's second innings.
The star of day was undoubtedly Tanvir. He had taken a five-for in Baluchistan's first innings, and extended his overnight unbeaten 38 to 132 before he was caught off Imranullah Aslam. Tanvir scored over three runs every four balls, and hit 19 fours and a six. He was involved in a 155-run stand with wicketkeeper Naeem Anjum, who was unbeaten on 56 when Federal Areas declared.

With both South Africa and Pakistan already assured of places in the World Cup the final of the qualifiers in Stellenbosh was all about bragging rights and they went South Africa's way with an overwhelming eight-wicket victory. Alicia Smith's five wickets skittled Pakistan for a paltry 61 and it took the home side less than 14 overs to knock off the runs.
South Africa have been far and away the best team in the tournament and again showed the gap between themselves and the rest. Smith struck with her first ball by trapping Bismah Maroof lbw - the first of five ducks for Pakistan - and there were some easy pickings on offer. Smith took her tournament haul to 11 wickets and Tasqeen Qadeer (12) was the only batsman to reach double figures.
As throughout the event extras played a major part in the scoring and were the major contributor with 26. Conceding 15 wides was the one blemish for South Africa in the field.

Kallis and Smith take South Africa closer

Kallis' 5 for 30 saw Bangladesh collapse to 182 all out, and solid knocks from Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla got them to within 27 of the 205 needed before the victory push was halted by bad light

In the four years since he last took five wickets in a Test innings, Jacques Kallis has cemented his position as one of the batting greats of the modern age, but it was an inspired eight-over spell on the third morning at the National Stadium in Mirpur that went a long way towards destroying Bangladeshi hopes of an epochal victory.
Kallis' 5 for 30 triggered a collapse to 182 all out, and solid knocks from Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla got them to within 27 of the 205 needed before the victory push was halted by bad light. Shahadat Hossain, who starred with 6 for 27 in the first innings, and Mohammad Rafique induced a late-afternoon wobble, but dour batting from Ashwell Prince and AB de Villiers shut the door in the final overs of the day.

Wayne Parnell turned in a sensational all-round performance, scoring 57 and then taking 6 for 8 to skittle out Bangladesh for 41 as South Africa claimed a comfortable 201-run win at the Bayueamas Oval in Kuala Lumpur to move into the semi-final.
Bangladesh got off to a dreadful start with Parnell removing both their openers in the first over. Once Mithun Ali was caught and bowled by Matthew Arnold, Parnell cleaned up the next four batsmen as Bangladesh collapsed to 29 for 7. Parnell gave himself a break after a five-over spell, and his replacement, Obus Pienaar, accounted for Suhrawadi Shuvo and Subashis Roy in his only over to end the Bangladesh innings as Dolar Mahmud had retired hurt. It was an abject performance by Bangladesh, who went unbeaten through the group stages.

Jamaica claimed a thrilling one-run win over defending champions Guyana, who failed to score the 12 runs required off the final over bowled by Marlon Samuels, to move into the final of the Stanford 20/20. Jamaica will now face Trinidad and Tobago in Sunday's title clash.
Guyana had a pathetic start to their chase of 143. They slumped to 42 for 5 by the 11th over against some tight bowling by the pace duo of Jerome Taylor and Darren Powell and the spin of Marlon Samuels. Travis Dowlin hit a boundary on the first delivery of Guyana's innnings but he made a quick return to the pavilion after miscuing a shot off Taylor. Samuels was introduced into the attack as early as the fifth over and he found success first-ball, dismissing Sewnarine Chattergoon. Powell then struck twice in the next over; he cleaned up Shivnarine Chanderpaul (10) with a yorker before having Lennox Cush caught behind. Guyana were staring down the barrel when captain Ramnaresh Sarwan holed out to Shawn Findlay at long-off while stepping out against Samuels.

A spirited chase led by Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa fell 18 short as Australia celebrated the end of Ricky Ponting's rocky batting patch with a tight victory. While the home side toasted a return to form ahead of Sunday's first final, India's plight to reach the CB Series deciders now comes down to the match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday after they reached 299, a haul relying on Gambhir's second century of the tournament.
A horrible series was forgotten by Ponting during his fine 124 while half-centuries to Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds also lifted their clouds of poor form in a brutal team display of 7 for 317. In the face of such a challenge - it was easily the highest total of the series - India were always behind and it was only the performances of Gambhir and Robin Uthappa that kept them in the game after the first four wickets went by the 11th over.

Federal Areas began the second day on 79 for 3 in Karachi and were in a position where they could have frittered away the advantage of having restricted Baluchistan to 253. However, their batsmen produced a solid performance and they finished the day with a lead of 188.
Raheel Majeed and Usman Saeed, who produced impressive performances in against Punjab, set the day's tone for run-scoring, adding 94 before their 121-run fourth-wicket stand came to an end.
Majeed fell for 98 to Bilal Khilji, while Usman Saeed was trapped leg-before by Kamran Hussain for 109, which included 16 boundaries. Naved Ashraf, the Federal Areas captain, ensured more misery for the Baluchistan bowlers, as he scored a brisk 141 off 200 balls, studded with 24 fours and two sixes.

Shahadat and Siddique help hosts seize momentum

Shahadat Hossain and Junaid Siddique were the heroes as Bangladesh had the better of the second day of the opening Test in Mirpur

Shahadat Hossain and Junaid Siddique were the heroes as Bangladesh had the better of the second day of the opening Test in Mirpur. Having established a 22-run first-innings lead, they were then indebted to Siddique for a stodgy unbeaten 64 that stretched it to 147 by stumps. Dale Steyn produced another superb new-ball spell as Bangladesh slumped to 29 for 3 before tea, but a 56-run partnership between Siddique and Mohammad Ashraful thwarted South Africa for a fair while in the final session.
Shahadat, who bowled at a lively pace and with tremendous control for career-best figures of 6 for 27, may have been the main man but the talking point of the day was provided by Ashraful. By the time he brought himself on shortly before lunch, the momentum had swung towards South Africa, with AB de Villiers riding his luck to 46 and Johan Botha offering stout resistance.
