Andy Carter's progress was hampered by injuries since he joined Nottinghamshire in 2008. A tall fast bowler with an ability to mix aggressive short balls and yorkers from a great height, he made his first class debut in 2009 but has never achieved an injury-free run to explore his full potential. He once protested abouyt those who termed him injury prone, saying that he just got injured a lot. But he retired, for all that, at 26.
His high spot was a call up by England Lions in March 2011 after he had bowled impressively in the nets at the National Cricket Centre in Loughborough. He was flown to the Caribbean to make his Lions debut, under the charge of Nottinghamshire's director of cricket Mick Newell.
However, more injury problems followed. He needed an ankle operation early in his career, and even though he followed up his Lions tour by taking 4 for 20 -- all bowled -- against Derbyshire in a Twenty20 match at Trent Bridge, he was plagued by abdominal and hamstring injuries.
He made a breakthrough in 2012, playing in nine of Nottinghamshire's County Championship matches and grossing 47 wickets across all three formats. But back trouble struck him down in 2013 and after again raising hopes with a hostile pre-season in Barbados, his 2014 season ended with confirmation of a back stress fracture.
Even his most heroic Notts display - against Worcestershire at Trent Bridge in 2015 - had an injury story attached. He was presumed to be out of the match on the first evening by his director of cricket, Mick Newell, because of an abdominal tear, only to decide to give it a go as he drove from his home in Lincoln to the ground the following morning, and take 4 for 46 to take a weakned Nottsa attack to victory. He departed for Derbyshire at the end of that season but rarely impressed there or on a loan spell with Hampshire and retired before the 2016 season was out.
