Brett Hutton, a medium-fast bowler and aggressive lower order batsman, made his Nottinghamshire Championship debut in a dour end-of-season affair against Somerset at Trent Bridge in 2013. His maiden first-class wicket had quite a story behind it as it meant that Marcus Trescothick, Somerset's former England opening batsman, ended the season without a first-class century for the first time since 1998.

Two summers later, he joined two more young Nottinghamshire seamers, Jake Ball and Luke Wood, in re-energising a side that at one time had flirted with relegation, playing a stout-hearted part in a victory against Worcestershire at Trent Bridge that turned the season. Notts did go down in 2016, leaving him as one of a clutch of wholehearted young seamers who offered most hope of recovery.#

Surprisingly, as he searched for a regular place in all competitions, Hutton chose to move on at the end of 2017, agreeing a three-year deal with Northamptonshire. He had struggled to break into the Notts side at the start of the season, but finished as the club's leading wicket-taker in the Championship. Nevertheless, no appearances in limited-overs cricket tore the heart from his season and left him impatient for regular cricket.

His first season at Wantage Road coincided with a dismal Northants effort, but he was one of the few saving graces. His 45 Championship wickets included a career-best 8 for 57 against Gloucestershire and he had enough short-form appearances to suggest the format was within his remit.

Hutton is an England Under-19 international who made his first-class debut at the start of the 2011 season in the Champion County match against MCC in Abu Dhabi and appeared in two limited overs matches for Nottinghamshire in 2011. His strong performances in five Under-19 one-day internationals against South Africa in 2011 summer earned him a place on winter trips to Bangladesh and Australia, and to the Under-19 World Cup in Australia in 2012, where he scored 55 batting at No. 9 in a warm-up match against Zimbabwe and took five wickets at 23.20 as England finished fifth in the competition proper.
