Dan Hodgson first drew attention to himself during Yorkshire's campaign in the Champions League in 2012, keeping wicket while two senior wicketkeepers Jonny Bairstow and Andrew Hodd, were absent because of injury and unavailability. He even helped to run out Sachin Tendulkar in a match against Mumbai Indians.

Hodgson, on a summer contract at that stage, made his Yorkshire breakthrough late in that season, playing 40-over cricket when Gerard Brophy a month before the end of the season. He added to his experience in Zimbabwe with Mountaineers that winter before gaining more first team experience with Yorkshire in 2013.

In his maiden first-team appearance of the season, he struck 76 off 55 balls against Gloucestershire and, as a result, featured in every T20 match. He also showed more promise at the end of the season with 90 off 98 balls as an opening batsman against Glamorgan at Headingley.

Hodgson was born in Northallerton, in the north of the county, and initially it looked as if a Durham raid across the border would be successful. He played for Durham at junior level and also for Darlington in the North Yorkshire South Durham League before university brought him cricket opportunities with Leeds/Bradford and caught Yorkshire's eye.

He had a spell on loan at Derbyshire in 2014 and was released in 2015.
