Barbados' right-arm quick Hendy Bryan had an enviable start to his West Indies career. In his first ODI, in Kingston in 1999, he dismissed Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh and Michael Bevan. Bryan was named the Player of the Match for a haul of 4 for 24, as West Indies defended 209.

The call-up to the national side had come after Bryan's bowling average remained below 30 in five successive competitions - including while playing for the South Africa domestic side Griqualand West, and when representing Barbados in the Commonwealth Games in 1998.

Bryan struck only once in the remaining six ODIs during his debut series against Australia. However, the memorable start was enough to take Bryan to the 1999 World Cup.

Bryan then played ODIs during the Coca Cola Challenge in September 1999, and took 3 for 36 against Zimbabwe in West Indies' first match. But he went wicketless in five of his next six ODIs just after that series and lost his place in the side, never to play for West Indies again.
