Opening batter Jake Weatherald made headlines when in his debut first-class season in 2015-16, he made a mile-a-minute fifty for South Australia against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield final. He followed that up with a somewhat more sedate 96 in the second innings, though Victoria won eventually. It set the seal on a fine season which he had kicked off with 58 in his first ever first-class innings. Weatherald was the most prolific domestic run-scorer under the age of 25 that season, and was runner-up for the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award.

The next two seasons were standouts too. In 2016-17, in his second successive Shield final, Weatherald made 60, but again Victoria proved too strong. The following season he topped 750 runs for South Australia, averaging a touch under 40. That tally included two big hundreds in a game against Western Australia in Perth, where South Australia came from behind to successfully get to 325 in the final innings - their biggest winning chase at the WACA. Weatherald's purple patch extended to the white-ball game too, where he put on three century opening partnerships with Alex Carey in the JLT One-Day Cup and made two hundreds himself.

The following season was not quite so stellar, if only by his own high standards, but he did shine in T20, making 383 runs in Adelaide Strikers' BBL-winning campaign.

In November 2019, Weatherald and Henry Hunt put on 293 for the first wicket, a South Australia record, in a Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania; Weatherald's share was 198. That season and the one that followed, were also productive ones for him in the Big Bash, where he made over 400 runs apiece for Strikers.
