James Coles became Sussex's youngest-ever first-class debutant at the age of 16, when he was handed an opportunity in the Bob Willis Trophy against Surrey at The Oval. He dismissed Rory Burns, Ben Foakes and Jamie Smith to finish with match figures of 3 for 35, and made 21 runs from No. 6.

Coles is a product of Sussex's player development partnership with the Oxfordshire Cricket Board, and attends Magdalen College School in Oxford. He signed a professional deal early in the 2021 season, and was due to join the staff full-time at the end of the academic year.
