Montagu Toller played a handful of games for Somerset in 1897 after impressing for Sammy Wood's XI in the early-season trial match in which he made 33. After matting in the middle order in his first match, he found himself batting at No. 10 where opportunities were, obviously, limited. He also played for Devon and in 1900 was in the England (in effect Devon Wanderers) side that won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
