Jamaican Tom Dewdney was a proper No. 11, unless Alf Valentine or Sonny Ramadhin beat him to it, but he was big at six-and-a-half feet and could bowl fast. He was a few months past his 21st birthday when he made his first-class debut (he had played a two-day match for Jamaica Colts prior to that, which was given retrospective first-class status) for Jamaica, and then played against the touring Australians in 1955. He didn't get many wickets, but impressed with his pace. And so he found himself in the squad for the Test series against Australia, got in the XI for the fourth Test, part of a bowling attack headlined by Ramadhin, Valentine and Denis Atkinson. He got four wickets in the first innings.
He went to New Zealand the following season too, and got 5 for 21 in 19.5 overs in New Zealand's first innings in the Auckland Test. That remained his best in Test cricket in a first-class career that went on till 1961 but never quite reached great heights.
Dewdney was in the car, driven by Garry Sobers, that collided with a truck in Staffordshire in the wee hours of September 9, 1959, and led to the death of Collie Smith, who was sleeping in the back seat when the accident took place. The three of them, all playing in the Lancashire league at the time, were driving to London to play a charity match. Sobers and Dewdney also suffered minor injuries in the crash.
