That is it...

Eight hours of bidding, 102 best players chosen, and six new T20 teams created: the SA20 is here and how. The twin blows of the past to CSA seem like ages, and they will be very keen to welcome what awaits them in four months' time. As Smith mentioned, there is a long way to go yet - teams are yet to name their captains, commercial activities need to be planned and executed, among others - but all looks bright for CSA ahead. Thanks for your company during this big auction day, as we look forward to the action on the field. You can always visit the SA20 series page for all other news and updates. Until then, good night, and take care!

Hear from the commissioner

Graeme Smith, the league commissioner: "It's another step close to January. Today was a big day. No one knew what was to happen. We are off and running! There were couple of surprises [from today]. Some incredible stories: $125.8m were spent today! You have no clue what these guys [the owners] want and what they are looking for. Early January we kickstart with SA20, so keep building the hype!"

MI Cape Town's Peterson speaks

Robin Peterson, MI Cape Town's general manager: "Pretty happy. Good mix of players... it's an exciting squad. [We'll decide[ our captain. We will let you know! You had to get a balance among players, and also bench strength. It just depends how we want to stack up against which opposition in which conditions. If you have to win the title, you've got to play in the coastal wickets which support spin. We are pretty well covered in terms of bowling options"

Royals make it R5.4m, but give up after that. Capitals join in after JSK make it R5.5m, but they won't be able to buy other remaining players if they go so far ahead with Ferreira.
The rules say that every team must have 17 players. Both Royals and Capitals have limited purse and many more spots to fill. So, if they are allowed to bid further for Ferreira, they can't fill their 17 slots. There is a two-minute break announced to clarify matters. So JSK take Ferreira for R5.5m.

The signings so far...

Lance Klusener will be coaching DSG, Stephen Fleming is at Joburg Super Kings, JP Duminy will be with Paarl Royals, Graham Ford is at Pretoria Capitals, Adrian Birrell will head Sunrisers Eastern Cape, and Simon Katich is at MI Cape Town.

The latest child of franchise cricket has everything - in-demand international cricketers, successful coaches, cash-rich investors, and even an IPL-style auction; except, of course, the T in its name. Close to the dream... finally

Three, two, one... Let the latest T20 league run... Things look better than they ever have in what is Cricket South Africa (CSA)'s third attempt at staging a franchise competition. They first went about digging for success with the never-to-have-been unearthed T20 Global League in 2017-18; soon after, the Mzansi Super League did take off, only for it to hit rough ground, forced by Covid-19.
