South Australia 4 for 81 trail Victoria 220 (McDonald 72, Mennie 5-43) by 139 runs
South Australia reduced Victoria to 7 for 118 before the Bushrangers pacemen responded with bat and ball to leave the Sheffield Shield match tantalisingly poised at the MCG.
Andrew McDonald made 72 and Peter Siddle 41 for the hosts to tally 220, a far more competitive total than looked likely when Joe Mennie, Chadd Sayers and Carl Tietjens were running through the batting. SA then slipped to 4 for 81 by the close.
Mennie's 5-43 was his second* five-wicket haul in state cricket, and a reward for diligent lines on the MCG's drop-in pitch.
The Redbacks' reply appeared off to a sound start at 1 for 51, with the captain Michael Klinger scoring freely after James Smith's early departure. However Klinger, Tom Stray and Callum Ferguson fell in the space of 15 runs, leaving SA's innings more or less in the hands of Tom Cooper to guide towards parity.
McDonald, Siddle, Jayde Herrick and Will Sheridan have a wicket apiece, and will be seeking further breakthroughs when the match resumes.
