short ball on fifth stump, misses a pull. Wide signaled from square leg though to end the match. Sydney Thunder make it a Sydney sweep on the first two nights of the BBL. Seven-wicket win clinched with 17 balls to spare.
Heat vs Thunder, 2nd Match at Canberra, BBL, Dec 06 2021 - Match Result
Thunder won by 7 wickets (with 17 balls remaining)
10.16 pm Heat had Thunder under some mild pressure with three wickets in the Powerplay, but Billings and Ross counter with an unbeaten century stand to get the Thunder over the line with plenty of breathing room to spare. Thunder bowlers were the ones who really set up victory by restricting Heat to a well below par total.
Alex Ross is the Player of the Match: "I've just been playing club cricket in Adelaide for my home club Kensington and then some games in New South Wales ahead of this Big Bash. It's always been nice to get up the order and the higher you can bat, the better. Our bowlers set up that win though. 140 was never enough on that wicket. A few of the guys talk about continuity in the team. There's no egos. To get two wins over Sixers in the warm-up matches was good."
Sydney Thunder stand-in captain Chris Green: "Fantastic start to our campaign. I thought we timed the chase really well and our bowlers set it up. [On Gurinder Sindhu] If we wind the clock back, he's worked really hard and put in a lot of performances. It's great to see him do really well tonight. The class and experience that Rossy and Billbo showed through the middle took pressure off us. It was a tough wicket to get started on but after 20-30 balls, they upped the tempo beautifully. [On Daniel Sams] He's hungry for success. He wants that opportunity and I want to try to provide it to him as much as possible."
Heat captain Jimmy Peirson: "Not enough runs tonight. The class of Billings and Ross took the heart out of our chances. We're looking forward to having some missing players come back. But there's still some good class in our side. It was a little tacky early but sped up to bat quite nicely at the back end of our innings and then in their innings. I'm still sort of learning my trade through this role of captaincy and keeping. I learned a lot tonight. Lynny is a wealth of experience and I'll be leaning on him quite a bit, Duckett as well with both of them playing cricket around the world."
That's it from us tonight. For Andrew McGlashan and the scoring team, I'm Peter Della Penna. Come back tomorrow for some more BBL when the Melbourne Renegades take on the Adelaide Strikers. Until then, take care!
short on the body, flicked awkwardly to square leg.
Bartlett to bowl the 18th. Ross on strike to hit the winning run....
reverse sweep finally gets Billings the boundary to level the scores. Flighted full on leg stump, but continues with the premeditated swat through point. One run to win now.
missed runout! Charges again but misses a flick to a ball speared into his legs. Peirson scrambles into square leg to deny a single. A flick to the striker's stumps would've had Billings out as he was being sent back by Ross.
back of a length on off, punched to cover.
flighted ball slower outside leg, Billings tries to heave this over the leg side to end the match but misses.
full on the stumps, driven to mid-on.
Billings charges and clocks a straight drive over mid-on in the ring, careens over the rope.
Mujeeb to bowl his last.
Nine off 24 balls to win. Power Surge finally signaled.
back of a length, swatted into the leg side for one to bring up a century partnership.
full on the stumps, in the slot and creamed over wide long-on into the fourth row of the seats.
short on the body, flicked away into the leg side for one.
dropped! Full on the legs, goes to pull a slower ball and skies this swirling behind the stumps over Peirson. He gets tangled up in knots spinning around trying to get into position and lunges late with his back to the pitch but shells it. Tough chance on an awkward angle. Would've been easier for a fielder coming over from square leg or fine leg to call him off.
back of a length on the body, goes to flick into the leg side for one.
slower ball back of a length outside off, goes to cut and beaten for lack of pace.
Bazley now for his third.
short on the stumps, pulls this in the air to midwicket again for one.
short ball follows Ross backing away and is beaten by extra bounce.
back of a length slower ball on the hips, Billings is out in front of a pull and misses off the body before a carom goes to third man.
back of a length on fourth stump, Billings charges and misses a heave.
full on the legs, flicked through midwicket for another pair.
overpitched on the legs, flicked elegantly through midwicket to the rope.
Bartlett back now.
