Cooper Connolly finishes the game in style! Tossed up fuller length around off, down on one knee, lashed it over the bowler's head and dumped it over the sight screen!
Strikers vs Scorchers, 39th Match at Perth, BBL, Jan 18 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Scorchers won by 5 wickets (with 22 balls remaining)
That's all of our BBL action for today. Don't forget to join us tomorrow for the Hobart Hurricanes vs. Melbourne Stars. I'm signing off on behalf of Ranjith, Thilak, and myself, Rashad. Adieu.
Player of the Match Jason Behrendorff: "Well, it's really exciting that we could get it done tonight. In front of a huge crowd again. So we love playing here at home, we're so lucky and we've got a nervous wait for roughly 24 hours now. (AJ Tye and a few senior players waving at the crowd) Well, there are a few of us that don't have a contract yet for next year. So we're not sure when it's gonna land. But we've been so lucky to play here for so long and whatever happens, we've had an amazing time here and it's been good fun. (Young Players coming up) It's certainly changing. It's a hard one though. We want to keep playing obviously for as long as we can and we love doing what we do. It's honestly to play in front of this crowd, is something special. But yeah, at times we do have to change. Mahli's going really well. So we'll see what happens. (Cooper Connolly) Well, that's the thing. If we do get through to the Finals he'll be sorely missed. I think he (Connolly) just got the golden bat as well. So he's had a stellar year and as you said, Cath is at least most of the crowd here tonight absolutely love him. So there are probably a lot of posters on a lot of kids' walls with Cooper Connolly now. (Watching the game tomorrow) That's a very good question (laughter). We might go somewhere together, to be honest. Yeah, hopefully, we do that maybe down the coast somewhere, there's a few nice spots down there."
Tonight was a heartbreaking night for Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers supporters. The host team was aware of the equation at the very beginning of the innings. The scorchers got the innings off to a flying start. They were going well until they lost two wickets in one over: Fanning and Hardie. Carey's rapid glove work and excellent game understanding contributed significantly to both wickets. Despite losing a few wickets, the batters remained calm and composed. Cooper Connolly scored 39 runs off 21 balls, including four sixes, to lead the Scorchers to victory. Ultimately, it took a strong team effort to chase down the goal in the allotted 18 overs, with each batter doing their tasks rather effectively. The Scorchers are presently ranked fourth in the points chart. However, they will have to wait for the results of tomorrow's encounter. If the Stars defeat the Hurricanes, the Scorchers will be eliminated from the competition.
Perth Scorchers won the match by 5 wickets
That's a massive hit! Generously flighted ball in the slot, hangs back and muscles it away over long on for a huge six!
Non-turner delivery on the stumps, turns it down to the covers
Length ball on the pads, edged and hits the thigh pads and completes the single
Back of a length ball on the legs, strikes the pads
Alistair Beanli: "@GadesFan All the family gathered around the TV! Big Will Sutherland fans! Chief Chief Chief!"
Fuller length ball driven through the covers
Flighted fuller length around off, wild swing of the bat and failed to connect
Length ball down the leg-side, tries to swing it away, failed to connect, goes through the pads of Carey, excellent fielding from the circle fielder chasing it down, but the batters already completed three runs and the Adelaide Strikers' prospects of qualifying are therefore eliminated.
Floater delivery on the off stump, plays the lap scoop past the wicket keeper and sets off for a couple
GadesFan: "Can we get some Gades love in the chat please??! They're still alive here!"
Tossed up fuller length on the stumps, plays the reverse sweep and gets it over Lloyd Pope at short third man, reaches the boundary ropes
Length ball on the leg stump, turns it around down to fine leg region, gets the double
Good length ball around off, tries to play the ramp scoop, failed to connect and hits the front pad
Max: "What about if the scorchers hit a 4 when the scores are level? Would it be 18.1 or something?" If they hit a six while the scores are tied, they can take up to 18.3 overs.
Cleaned him up! Length ball with the arm on the stumps from around the wicket, cramped for space, slides on, tried to cut it square of the wicket, missed the line of the ball and failed to connect, the bails are flying!
Back of a length ball works it away and rotates the strike
Quicker ball on the pads, tucked away firmly through deep mid wicket region, good running between the wickets, direct hit at the striker's end would have been the end of Connolly, made a full stretched dive and covered his ground
A reminder for the Adelaide Strikers' fans: Adelaide Strikers need to restrict Perth Scorchers to 146 or less.
Full and overpitched around off, drills it away straight down the ground, brilliant fielding from Matt Short chasing it down and saving a boundary
Half-volley wide around off, pace off delivery, bludgeons firmly but failed to pierce through the gap, hits it straight to mid-off
Full and wide outside off, forces it away straight to extra cover
Releases the pressure! Length ball wide around off, makes room outside leg and smacks it straight over the bowler's head, clears the boundary ropes
Too full and too wide sliding outside off
