all over! Full outside off, drilled wide of mid-off for a boundary to seal victory
RCB vs Cape Cobras, 1st Match, Group C at Bengaluru, Oct 08 2009 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Cape Cobras won by 5 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)
The crowd applauds, the fireworks begin. What a chase! Duminy's the man of the hour. The Cobras were not a well-known outfit to most local fans here, and they've been treated to a thrilling opener. Bangalore would have fancied defending 180, but in the wake of Duminy's onslaught, there was little they could do except keep it tight at the other end. The others rallied around him, Ontong added 41 with him and Canning 61 in very quick time. Two early breakthroughs, including that of the dangerous Gibbs, had made it seem that this game was only heading one way but Duminy's changed all that with his hurricane knock. Stay put, we'll get you the presentation details in a bit.
A sea of people making their way out of the ground. Some have stayed back for the post-match formalities. We start now. Bishop's the host.
Duminy, of course, is the Man of the Match. Huge applause from the crowd, and he walks up with his pads still on!
Duminy: "By far the best I've played in this format. It just worked out in the end for us. It's a different team with a different management, it went well. The wicket was a little spungy, took some time to settle in and played their spinners well."
Kumble: "We missed a few chances in the field that cost us the game. Duminy, though, batted brilliantly. Some players are probably not used to the lights and the ball came on a little quicker. The ball came on to the bat and I thought 180 was sufficient. There was the option of bowling Kallis in the last over, but I thought the slower ball would prove more effective. Unfortunately, Vinay [who has a good slower ball] tried a different delivery. It's a great start to the tournament, unfortunately we ended on the losing side."
Puttick: "We were confident we could chase any score, but it was a little more than we expected. We were a little shaky playing in this tournament. But JP played superbly. We knew if we got one batsman to bat through the innings and build partnerships, keep their calm, we could chase this down. We didn't catch very well but it's down more to nerves. This win should calm us down. We are a laid-back bunch of guys, and I suppose it's up to me as captain to calm them down. We're just going to enjoy the experience and do our best."
That's all from us, folks. Thanks for tuning in and sending us your feedback. A fitting start to the tournament, and may it continue this way. Join us for the double-header tomorrow. Until then, on behalf of Jamie Alter, who's had a busy day doing the commentary for the first innings and has just finished stamping out the bulletin, this is Sid Talya signing off. See you guys later. Adios, Be well!
He has a word with his partner
full on the pads, clipped down to deep square leg for a single, he's left on 99!
Just two away from victory, and a richly deserved century
that's the decisive blow! Full outside off, moves across and slams it into the stands over wide long-on
Cobras have Duminy back on strike. A deep square leg and a long-on
missed run-out, full, mistimes a drive to midwicket, runs through for the single, easy return to the bowler who fails to collect! He would have been short by miles, what a mess
Kleinveldt on strike for the last over. 9 off 6 needed. Cobras would rather have had Duminy facing. Vinay Kumar has been given the ball. Kallis isn't bowling. Kumble takes his time to set the field. What a start to the tournament opener! Here we go. A short fine in place
deceived by the slower one, came down the track to pull it through midwicket, it cut away to beat the swing of the bat
9 off 7 needed
four more, short on the off and he's positioned himself for the pull in quick time, ramming it wide of long-on through midwicket for another boundary, all power in that shot
poor ball, full toss and Duminy cashes in, creaming it just wide of deep cover to the ropes, struck extremely hard
big swing, full outside off and 114 kmph, tries to hoick it over midwicket, doesn;t connect, the crowd roars
17 needed off 10.
Canning's done his job, though. Supported Duminy superbly in that 61-run stand, off just six overs. They've crossed, and Duminy's the man on strike. Kleiveldt is the new man in.
slower one bowled short, has a big swing, the slow pace does him in, too early into the shot, gets a top edge and Kumble takes a dolly at midwicket
slower one from round the wicket, dragged down to deep square leg for a single
18 off 12 with six wickets in hand in Twenty20 cricket is on most occasions, a formality. Praveen Kumar's been brought back. Takes his time to set the field. All done.
Cobras are on track to snatch this one. Another big over.
short on the off stump, bounced more, lucky for the batsman as he went for the cut and missed, whizzed over the off stump
short, pulled away to deep midwicket for a single
big one! Full outside off and Duminy executes the slog-sweep perfectly, a lot of elevation on it but also plenty of power, cleared deep midwicket by a fair distance, the crowd is stunned
dropped, hard chance, came down the track, took it on the half-volley and smacked it hard wide of Kumble who dived to his left but couldn't hold on, two more
quick single, pushed it uppishly in front of short cover for one more
short on the off, slapped hard to deep cover, a slight fumble but there's no second, 50-stand up
They're getting a minimum of a boundary an over. They've paced this chase perfectly. Cobras are the favourites to win it from here
tries to heave it hard over midwicket, mistimes it to deep square leg but there's plenty of time for them to run back for the second
comes down the track and pushes it down to long-on for a single
in the slot for Duminy, length ball on middle and he was prepared for that one, took his right foot out of the way and dismissed it miles into the stands over long-on
the reverse-paddle, takes it from leg stump, just one run for all that effort
short outside off, chopped down to short third for a single
drilled down the ground to long-off for a single
