All-round batting secures first win for Wellington

A thrilling last-ball finish prolonged Central Districts' search for their first win of the HRV cup as Wellington overhauled a daunting total at Westpac Stadium. Contributions right down the batting order, led by Stephen Murdoch's half-century took the home side to their first victory of the tournament.

Having won the toss, Central Districts openers Jamie How and Peter Trego whisked the score to more than 80 in seven overs. Wellington medium-pacer Dane Hutchinson, who took four wickets, ensured the final charge was comparatively muted as Central Districts lost four wickets for 34 runs to finish at 195.

A wobbly start threatened to silence Wellington's hopes before five overs were complete, but a blistering half-century partnership between Murdoch and Michael Pollard restored the chase Soon after curbing a stand that cost 58 runs in 32 balls, Central Districts were bruised by a James Franklin cameo as his 17-ball 31 helped keep the required rate in check. Murdoch fell for 52, with six fours and a six, and Franklin followed three overs later, but Luke Woodcock and Henry Walsh smashed 37 in 19 balls to seal the game.
