Slick Pakistan sink Ireland

Ireland women frittered away the advantage they had gained by restricting Pakistan women to 165, and were bowled out for 108 inside 44 overs. Pakistan's bowlers were disciplined, conceding only eight extras compared to Ireland's 27, and their fielders sharp as they defended a modest total but run-outs contributed to Ireland's defeat.

In fact run-outs were the feature of the day with Isobel Joyce effecting five in the Pakistan innings, including one along with keeper Jean Carroll to dismiss opener Tasqeen Qadeer for Pakistan's top score of 30. Qadeer made up for it by running out the Ireland captain Heather Whelan for one.

Pakistan started on a positive note with the openers Qadeer and Bismah Maroof adding 60 together. But legspinner Ciara Metcalfe struck in successive overs to remove Maroof and Sajida Shah before Joyce's hot streak on the field. Qadeer and Sana Javed were run out in the space of three runs. Sana Mir and Nain Abidi followed but not before they had added 36 for the fifth wicket and taken Pakistan past 100. When she ran out Asmavia Iqbal in the 44th over, Pakistan were reduced to 136 for 7. The last three batsmen added 29 in the remaining overs.

Ireland began the chase cautiously and reached 40 without loss in 17.4 overs before they lost 4 for 29. With no useful partnerships formed and wickets falling at regular intervals, Ireland were lucky to last as long as they did. Out of the last six batsmen only one managed to score more than two. Mir and Sadia Yousuf picked up two wickets each.

Netherlands women kickstarted their qualifying campaign with a comfortable eight-wicket win over Papua New Guinea. After choosing to field, a fine bowling performance saw them limit PNG to 102. Even that paltry total was reached with the help of 32 extras, including 29 wides. PNG captain Kune Amini, whose two sons are playing in the ongoing Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia, was the only batsman to get into double digits, making a patient 32.

Caroline de Fouw, the offspinner, was the pick of the Netherlands bowlers, giving away a miserly 14 runs in her 10 overs while picking up three wickets - a performance that fetched her the Player-of-the-Match award. Annemarie Tanke, the legspinner, also took three wickets, including that of Amini.

The Netherlands chase received an early setback when Cheraldine Oudolf was run out in the second over. After that it was smooth sailing as they overhauled the target with more than 20 overs to spare, losing only one more wicket in the process. Pauline te Beest remained unbeaten on 34 while wicketkeeper-batsman Violet Wattenberg chipped in with 20.

Despite the loss, Amini was satisfied with her side's performance. "We've never played on turf before so we tried our best and got some runs," she said. "It was a good experience and we want to improve in the next couple of games." PNG next take on South Africa, who thrashed Bermuda in their tournament opener, on Wednesday.

Zimbabwe women opened with a thumping 75-run win over Scotland in a low-scoring encounter. Opting to bat, Zimbabwe fell to 32 for 4 after 9.4 overs but recovered through a 48-run stand between Player-of-the-Match Yvonne Rainsford (37) and Sinikiwe Mpofu. Precious Marange was the only other batsman to make a significant contribution, scoring 22 off 30 balls. Zimbabwe folded at 147, their total boosted by the 30 extras given away by Scotland.

Scotland faltered during their chase, and were unable to string together any meaningful partnerships. Only Fiona Urquhart (10) managed to reach double figures. Despite benefiting from 23 extras, they were bundled out for 72, with the last three wickets falling in eight balls on the same score. Rainsford followed up her fine batting with 2 for 7 in six overs, figures which were matched by Emily Jinjika.
