solidly behind the line to see out the day!
7.07pm Right, that's enough action for one day. We lost an hour and a half to rain, and still the game is in fast-forward. Bring on day two! From Miller, Monga and Thilak, good night!
7.01pm Well, that has been a gripping opening day. So much ebb and flow, or ebb, torrent, ebb, to be frank, as England made the early running after winning the toss, with Potts and Anderson reducing India to 98 for 5. But Rishabh Pant's wonderful 146 from 111 balls, allied to Ravindra Jadeja's unbeaten 83, seized the afternoon with 222-run stand, but two late wickets, and some reticence about the quality of India's tail, means there is still a chance for England to wrap this up quickly on day two. And given how quickly this day has escalated, there's oodles of time for the match to take shape.
"Pant came out to play a bit of Bazball, as everyone keeps calling it," says Paul Collingwood, England's assistant coach. "When you have a bit of moisture in the pitch early on, you have a chance to take early wickets, which is what we did. We're going against the grain of much of the cricket's been played over the last 100 years, but Pant came out and played a blinder. You've got to give him full credit. We are trying to play as positive as possible, and play entertaining cricket. Ben's not going to take a backwards step."
right back on the stumps, and blocked to the on-side
hits the pitch hard outside off, a hint of nip back into the bat, left alone
Four slips, and a leg slip
on the back foot, flinched into the covers, a run-out chance flies to the rope! Stokes applauds the intent, but it's a dent in Potts' figures
on the back foot, tight line again, chopped down to the off side, and gathered in the gully
flicked urgently off the toes, and through wide long-on! Excellent strike, over-pitched a touch, but excellent wristwork
Right, this is conceivably the day's final over. And Jadeja is on strike. And on 74, since you didn't ask. And suddenly the field is in, three slips and an attacking line from round the wicket
sharp bouncer, lifting past the tailender, and into Billings' gloves
Sajeel Liaqat: "Silly from India to refuse singles. Should rather attack and try to add 50 more runs since shami knows how to use the long handle. Why try surviving when you found yourself at 98-5 doing that. " Different strokes, different blokes
outside off, back of a length, lures Shami into a bit of a fish, and he gets away with it
Chandra: "Right now England look like the frauds. We will soon find out if that ain't true. " A bit extreme, I would argue this is fascinatingly poised
very full length, punched to long-on, and once again, Shami has two to see out
on the back foot, fenced into the off side, hitting the pitch hard
straightens on a middle-and-off line and nudged to the on-side
outside off, in the channel, shaping away, left alone
flicked off the hips, an attractive strike on the back foot, front leg coming up on impact but midwicket tidies up with a slide
hits the pitch hard, outside off, rises on the back foot to defend to the off side
stabbed off the front foot, a push to cover
Ram: "Protecting Shami? How is that positive????Bizarre from Jadeja and India" Maybe they are playing for the close, but it does seem odd
excellent bowling Tight line, angled into the body, hitting the pitch hard, and keeping the two slips in play as he beats the edge
back of a length, chopped out to point
lflicked off the hips, past the diving Billings, and there was definitely bat on that one, says the ump! He flings out a glove, but just fingertips it to fine leg. At least, it's given as runs
Ashish: "Why did you mention specially, that Jaddu is on 69?" Cos he was. I just say stuff
down the leg-side, and Stokes reckons there's a tickle! Billings was up immediately, and England review. A flash down the leg side, very close to the glove, and away from the body... but nope, nothing on Ultra-Edge
rolls his wrists into the pull, and worked to square leg
A packed leg-side field, and a fly-slip. Not much in Shami's half, you suspect
