As it happened - Lucknow Super Giants vs Delhi Capitals, IPL 2022

By Sidharth Monga and Shashank Kishore

Pressure, what pressure asks Badoni

A young man in his first season, Ayush Badoni is an early candidate for Emerging Player of the Year. Having played out a dot with his side needing 5 off 4, he calmly drills a low full toss through extra cover to live the scores. The shot to then finish it is an absolute beauty: hammered over extra cover for six. Game, set and match cor the Super Giants. Third win in four games for Super Giants. Two losses in three for the Capitals.

Krunal takes on Mustafizur

A 14-run penultimate over - fuelled by a six over long-on - brings it down to 5 off 6. Hooda holes out to sweeper cover off the first ball to give Shardul a wicket. It's 5 off 5 now.

Krunal-Hooda to bring LSG home?

These two couldn't stand each other last year. Hooda accused Krunal, Baroda's captain, of "bullying" and left the team bubble in a huff. What followed thereafter was a massive public feud that led to Hooda's exit from the state side. He moved up north to Rajasthan and performed well in the one-day competition to earn a spot in the Indian team, before eventually making his debut. Quirks of fate or luck, if you can call it, has now brought two warring players into the same IPL franchise. There has, of course, been no sign of that animosity on display.

Forgettable night for Nortje

As if conceding 36 of 2.2 wicketless overs wasn't enough, Anrich Nortje has now been taken off the attack because he has bowled two beamers. Both were possibly down to him attempting to hit the blockhole with a wet ball. The first one was swatted by de Kock for six. The second was sliced by Hooda to cover. Not only is it a no-ball, the free-hit delivery is being bowled by Kuldeep, who gets walloped for two boundaries but returns to pick up de Kock off the final delivery with a teaser that he slices to short third. LSG need 28 off 24.

Lewis c Yadav b Yadav

Ewin Lewis struggled to time the ball today. It helped that Super Giants only had a middling chase. He was tied down by spin and the slowness of the surface may have forced a false shot. A skied top-edge lodges safely with Kuldeep Yadav. Full marks to Lalit Yadav for the wicket. Slowed it down nicely, the drift in from around the stumps helped too. Got the feeling Lewis was itching to pull. Super Giants are still well ahead, with de Kock batting past a half-century along with an in-form Deepak Hooda. Our Predictor says they have an 85% chance of winning with seven overs left.

Wicket against the run for Capitals

KL Rahul miscues to Prithvi Shaw at long-off as the Capitals break a 73-run opening stand. The bad news, though, is Lucknow Super Giants are halfway home with half their chase left. Rahul was looking to unsettle Kuldeep right from get-go here. Kuldeep's job was that much harder because he had a wet ball to contend with. With that wicket-taking delivery, he got the landing spot on and Rahul ended up slicing it.

Welcome to IPL 2022, Anrich

His first over, the fifth of the innings, goes for plenty.Taking the attack to him is his South Africa teammate Quinton de Kock. In taking 19, Nortje has bowled his joint-most expensive over in the IPL.

Advantage Super Giants

Just the two boundaries off the first four. Both KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock know they don't need to take too many risks. The Capitals are trying to get overs of spin out of the way before the ball is reduced to a bar of soap. Already we saw in the mid-innings that there was considerable dew. This ain't going to help the Capitals one bit. As such they may be 25 short here. It's advantage Lucknow Super Giants

Stuck in quicksand, part 2

19 Runs DC managed in the last three overs, the second-lowest when a side has two top-six batters at the wicket

Stuck in quicksand

2 Number of smaller totals than DC's 149 for the loss of three wickets or fewer. And it is not for the lack of trying. Just that the bowlers were too good on the night

Strong finish from LSG

After the disastrous 16th over from Andrew Tye, Avesh Khan and Jason Holder make a superb comeback for LSG. They use the spongy bounce in the pitch with their cutters but also bowl a fair dose of yorkers. Holder is absolutely superb, conceding no boundary in two overs at the death. Avesh concedes just the two. Just 32 runs in the last four overs despite the opposition being just three down. This had the feels of the 2014 world T20 final. And there is significant dew out there now.

After hitting his first boundary off the last ball of Ravi Bishnoi's allotment, Rishabh Pant totally lays into Andrew Tye, who has given him slot balls to hit. A four back over his head, and two sixes over long-off. He finally goes past a run a ball. DC 117 for 3 in 16 overs. Big overs coming up.

DC keep struggling

Still just the one boundary from batters not named Prithvi Shaw. That from Sarfaraz Khan. Rishabh Pant struggling at 7 off 17. It's 90 for 3 in 14 overs. Projected score 142.

Warner c Badoni b Bishnoi 4 (12)

That is not the homecoming DC fans would have anticipated. Ravi Bishnoi, who bowls well against left-hand batters, pushes this across him, and Warner has to reach out to make a connection. All he manages, though, is a top edge for short third man. DC 69 for 2 in 8.3 overs. Projected score 164

Gowtham finally gets Shaw

Prithvi Shaw's thrilling knock has come to an end at 61 off 34 balls. After Shaw hits K Gowtham for a straight six and extra-cover four in the eighth over, Gowtham goes round the wicket, and the angle and the slight extra bounce takes the edge on the cut. DC have promoted Rovman Powell.

Shaw gets nearly a fifty in PP

Superb off the back foot, Prithvi Shaw has obliterated LSG's attempts to bowl hard lengths at him, and has scored 47 runs off 27 balls in the powerplay. David Warner is 3 off 9 at the other end. At 52 for 0 at the end of the powerplay, for some reason DC are projected to get 163. They shoudl get more.

Shaw eases Warner in

David Warner is coming back home to Delhi, and he finds a one-man welcoming committee that is letting him ease his way back in. Warner is 3 off 6 but Capitals are 27 for 0 in three overs thanks to Prithvi Shaw, who is batting the way Shaw does. Three fours and a six in his 22 off 12. Projected score: 166

KL vs RP

It's game 15 of the IPL 2022, and we have Delhi Capitals facing Lucknow Super Giants. Capitals will be welcoming David Warner. Also perhaps Anrich Nortje. That makes them a formidable side. Sarfaraz Khan has got his DC cap too, which is also an exciting news. Better late than never, I say.
LSG fans will be hoping Marcus Stoinis is ready and available. We will know soon at the toss.
