As it happened: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians, DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai

By Andrew Miller and Deivarayan Muthu

Twin run-outs finish off Mumbai

Chaos at the DY Patil Stadium. Pollard is dropped and run-out off the same ball. Bumrah, who was sensational with the ball earlier in the evening, is run-out off the next as Mumbai are bowled out for 113. Bumrah is out without facing a ball. KKR win by 52 runs

Cummins' triple-wicket 15th over

The last time these two sides met, Cummins smashed a 14-ball fifty and won it with the bat for KKR. Now, he has bounced out half-centurion Kishan, Sams and Ashwin in the same over to bring KKR closer to a victory that will mathematically keep them in contention for the playoffs

Fifty and out

Kishan has needed 41 balls for his half-century with the other batters around him taking more chances. Talking of those chances, Pollard muscles Narine to midwicket, with the force of the shot ensuring the ball bursts through the hands of Shreyas. Mumbai are 100 for 4 in 14 overs. KKR are 69% favourites to win. Their win probability shoots up to 81% after Cummins bounces out Kishan for 51

Bye, bye, David

Narine is working his way through another thrifty spell, but the returning Varun has conceded 15 in his first two overs. Varun, though, comes back and cuts short David's innings at 13. He drags one from outside off only to send it into the hands of Rahane at deep midwicket. Pollard takes on Varun second ball and skies it over Rahane for six. That's Pollard's power: a mishit clearing the boundary.

Hello David

He starts off with a sequence of 4,4,4. The first and third were short balls that were put away to the midwicket boundary. He was sitting back for that length. David was also ready for the drive when Russell shifted his length fuller and ends up bowling a full-toss, which was serenely driven past him for four. Is David ready to take over from baton from Pollard for Mumbai?

Russell snags Varma, Ramandeep

In the injury-enforced absence of Suryakumar, Varma enters at No.3 and goes for 6 off 5 balls. Russell pounds it on a heavy length and even though this angles away from Varma, he is cramped and flaps a chest-high catch to slip. That's the length you need to hit on on this DY Patil pitch as Bumrah showed earlier in the evening. Mumbai are 32 for 2 in five overs. They slide to 69 for 3 in the 11th over when Russell returns and hits that in-between length once again. Ramandeep hoicks to the leg side, and ends up skying a catch to point. KKR are 65% favourites to win this.

Bizarre play: Rohit's dismissal

Southee darts one back into Rohit from a back of a length. The ball loops behind and then dies on its way towards first slip. Jackson, though, throws himself to his right and comes out with the ball in his right glove. He thinks he has his man as KKR review the on-field not-out call. UltraEdge detects multiple spikes even before the bat meets ball and there are more spikes as the ball passes bat. Umpire Bruce Oxenford, however, is convinced that Rohit has hit it and overturns the on-field not-out decision. Also, they didn't check whether it was a clean catch from Jackson. A frustrated Rohit drags himself off the field.

Bumrah puts seal on stirring Mumbai fightback

1
Tim Southee knows how to find the boundary, but not today. A cross-batted hack down the ground from Daniel Sams' final ball of the day picks out Kieron Pollard on the edge of the rope at long-on, and KKR's stutter continues at a pace.
Over to Bumrah then, for the innings' last rites. Utterly pinpoint, from first ball to sixth, and he's millimetres away from serving up a death-over maiden before being driven for a single to finish KKR's faltering knock. Final figures of 5 for 10 in four overs. Not a bad day's work.
"It was a good day, very important to stay in the present, it worked, very happy I backed the processes."

Bumrah blasts through KKR's tail!

W

Bumrah's making his move on this game now! First ball of his third over, fast and fierce, skidding yet rising into Sheldon Jackson's flighty pull to deep midwicket, where Daniel Sams judges his leap to perfection to cling on, diving to his left.
Bumrah then greets Pat Cummins - remember him? - with a fizzing bouncer that Cummins does well to duck, then sends him on his way one ball later with another rock-hard length - even a man with a 15-ball 56 to his name can't hit that for six - instead he only scuffs it as far as square leg!
His next ball is simply a snorter. Round the wicket, as completely at Sunil Narine as it is possible to be, blitzing into his half-cocked splice as Narine rears back into his crease to fence a looping chance straight back to the incoming bowler. The hat-trick yorker is inches too short to wriggle under Southee's bat, then he beats the edge to complete the maiden. Remarkable heat and hostility!

Bumrah downs Dre Russ, Nitish!

Inevitable intent from the mighty Dre Russ, as he monsters his second ball over long-on for six. But look who's lurking for the match-up of match-ups... Jasprit Bumrah's bowled just one over of the first 14, but he returns to the fray with an extraordinarily pinpoint yorker that Russell does brilliantly to dig out from under his toes. But it's just a one-ball reprieve. Hard into the pitch next up, a wild swipe across the line, Pollard steadies himself to swallow a vital chance!
Bumrah's over's not done yet either... more feisty fireworks with the well-set Nitish in his sights - a glove-seeking bouncer, fended off the grille ... the umpire is unmoved but UltraEdge tells a different story. Gamechanging stuff from Mumbai's mightiest weapon!

Nitish gets busy as Pollard fumes

Kieron Pollard is not a happy chap after a bruising onslaught from Nitish Rana in the 13th over. His opening gambit is a monstrous inside-out thump over extra over, 86m into the stands, whereupon Pollard aborts his run-up next ball in response to some urgent fidgeting at the crease. Two dot-balls later, and Pollard is incensed to be called wide for a ball that is fired well outside the off-side tramlines, but passes under Nitesh's blade as he shimmies across his crease. Inevitably, the next two balls are clubbed for four and six, through the covers and over midwicket respectively. But a slower-ball bouncer dots up the over.
A strategic Time Out works wonders for Mumbai though. First-ball after the break, and Shreyas feathers a perfect legbreak from Ashwin to the keeper. It's 'Dre Russ time!

Rahane falls as KKR seek to pick up tempo

W

The halfway mark, and KKR are sitting pretty on 87 for 1 after a steady period of ticking-over from Nitish and Rahane. But, as if on cue, Rahane realises it's time to put the hammer down, and instead it's Kartikeya who puts down his leg stump, straightening one past a lusty sweep-shot, just one ball after seemingly being dropped down the leg side off a similar stroke. He's gone for an unspectacular 25 from 24 balls, but as Shreyas Iyer arrives with 58 balls of the innings remaining, it's possibly a decent swap for KKR. Nitish certainly gets the memo as the skipper walks in... back-to-back swings for six down the ground complete the over and bring up the 100.

Iyer fires as KKR take powerplay strides

It's an all-action first over from Riley Meredith, and most of the action favours KKR. Venkatesh Iyer signals his determination to make the powerplay tell with a rifled drive through the covers - not quite timed, but the gallop to the pitch is all intent. Next up, a stunning ramp - more of a full-blooded pull to be fair - into position early and thumped on the up over fine leg for six. Meredith responds with a wild bouncer that sails out of the keeper's reach, but the final ball of the over could so nearly have been curtains ... a punch to midwicket and an instant call, but Pollard springs to his right, grabs in one hand and all but pings down the stumps in the same motion.
Iyer's innings gets even better in Kartikeya Singh's first over - first, a flat-footed hack through third man as he skims an edge out of the keeper's reach, then a flat-batted mow for another six over midwicket. One ball later, he over-reaches himself and top-edges to Daniel Sams. But Nitish finishes the powerplay with similar drive, a smoke through the covers for a second-ball four. 64 for 1 is KKR's best start of the competition.

Bumrah joins the battle

1
Ajinkya Rahane, relatively becalmed compared to a rampant Venkatesh at the other end, opts not to try to outpace his team-mate, and settles for filleting Jasprit Bumrah's first ball through deep backward point for a sumptuous four. But that about as much of a dent as he can put in the mighty Bumrah. The only other run off his first over is an inside-edged punch through backward square to get off the mark.

Venkatesh gets KKR's innings flowing

Not a lot of swing on offer for Daniel Sams in his first over, but a canny variation in length, and a fine intercept from Murugan Ashwin at fine leg limit the damage to 3. But it's Ashwin himself who lets KKR get into their evening's work, a half-tracker is launched over midwicket by Venkatesh for six, before an over-pitched googly from his final ball is drilled through the covers. It's tough at the top of the innings for the leggie.

Downed Mumbai seek to drag KKR down to their level

You might not have picked this one as a basement battle, going by the established pedigree of two teams that have won seven IPL titles between them in the past ten editions. However, Mumbai Indians have had a post-mega-auction shocker, and are already out of the running for this year's play-offs. But, having just about emerged from their tailspin with consecutive wins in their last two outings, they are in the mood to drag KKR down with them. A win for KKR tonight, however, and they will be right back in the chasing pack, on 10 points, albeit having played a game more.
Here's S Sudarshanan's preview to whet your appetite. It's all getting underway imminently.
In the USA, you can watch the action LIVE on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.
And there's been breaking news already, with the news that SKY is out of contention for the rest of the tournament
