and Jasen has finished it off in one shot. Wide and good length again, but Jansen's reach makes it a half-volley. And he eases it over mid-off for a big six
Capitals vs Eastern Cape, Final at Johannesburg, SA20, Feb 11 2023 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Eastern Cape won by 4 wickets (with 22 balls remaining)
5.30pm That brings to the end of the inaugural SA20. It has been a successful tournament with full houses and a lot of cheer. There is a Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa to switch to. Thanks for joining us. Have a good one.
5.10pm Time for the presentation.
"I don't think we were given a chance," says Aiden Markram, the winning captain of Sunrisers Eastern Cape. "There was a lot of hanging in there. You can't create it. It is all about individuals and how much they care about the team. Who better than Roelof to motivate the team. With the small totals, we have to break the back up front, and Rossington is the right guy to do that. I do enjoy captaincy. Prior to this tournament, I hadn't done it in a while. When you have a great group of guys, it makes your job easier. The guys were desperate to win. The fans have been credible. That crowd at St George's Park is something else. This one is for them."
"It has been such a great tournament," says Wayne Parnell, captain of the runners-up side Pretoria Capitals. "A special day in domestic cricket in South Africa. Even though we beat SEC twice, we aways said they are a special team. We were 20-25 runs short. If we had 155-160, it would have been a better game. In the end it looks close, but with 135 if someone has a great hit in the powerplay, it is difficult to putt it back. In hindsight, probably would have bowled Nortje and Rashid earlier, but we needed 20 runs more. We have always wanted to be brave. We had one blowout game, but that can happen with any team. Everyone left their egos at the door, and bought into what we were trying to achieve."
Aiden Markram is the Player of the Tournament. Jos Buttler is the Batter of the Tournament, and Roelof van der Merwe is the Bowler of the Tournament.
Eathan Bosch is the Rising Young Star, the best uncapped under-25 South African in the tournament.
Roelof van der Merwe is the Player of the Match. "Unbelievable day," he says. "Can't for anything more. My age you never know what will be your last game so I give everything into every ball. There was help in the wicket. So looking back at what Rossington did, that is what won us the game. Still buzzing. Will sink in once we have the debrief in the change room."
4.50pm "I am drained and exhausted," Roelof van der Merwe says. "Ross took us close, and after that we were confident."
"Bit stressful at the end," says Marco Jansen. "But happy to take the team over the line. The plan was to just get bat on ball. After that over from Anna, I just thought let's get bat on ball. And if it is there, go for it. We didn't have the best starts, but after that game at Cape Town, everything sort of cliked. I don't think I can feel it now, maybe tomorrow I will reflect on this win."
4.45pm Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the first champions of the SA20. They lost twice to Pretoria Capitals in the league stages, but have won the final. They won the crucial toss, and then their spinners bowled beautifully to keep PC down to 135. Had they got to 155, which they looked good for, this would have been a very difficult chase. Rossington then killed it in the powerplay. Nortje and Rashid simply didn't have enough to play with by the time they started to bowl.
that will calm them more. Within one shot now. Wide and slightly overpitched, and Jansen drives it between mid-off and cover
Neesham to bowl now
PC's two most dangerous bowlers are out of the way. SEC need just nine
bouncer to end the spell. He ends with 20 wickets. Joint-highest with van der Merwe
short of a length, down the leg side, concedes a wide. Single figures now
on a length, around off, defended off the back foot
short of a length, holds its line, beats the outside edge
it's Carse and not van der Merwe. One wide slip in place
The final strategy break of the tournament. I expect van der Merwe to come out to bat at the other end of this
lovely catch. Neesham has one for the highlights reel again. Paul Collingwood-style. Extra bounce on a length ball, goes off the outside half of the bat, to the left and high of Neesham of short cover. he turns his body, wins himself time, but has to go with the right hand. And he catches it. PC still alive. Nortje level with van der Merwe for most wickets in the tournament
on a length, angling in, runs off the inside half of the bat for one
full, angling in, hits the pad
Rashid is done. One Nortje over to negotiate. Speaking of, here he is
full, on off, defended to cover
another wrong'un not picked, but it bounces off the pad and goes over slip for a leg-bye
soft hands even as Rashid slows it down. Pushes it wide of cover for one
big stride in to defend this one
wrong'un, doesn't pick it, but gets a single into the leg side
reverse-sweep attempted and not well. He is ;lucky he has not got out. Just missing off
Adil Rashid to bowl out. Jansen has taken down Rashid Khan in the past
tucked away off the pads for a single
on a length, pretty straight, defended off the front foot
on a length, outside off, punched to mid-off
wide half-volley. Not quite for other batters but for Jansen it is. He has hit this straight to short cover
Still 15 required. Funny things happen in T20 cricket. Here is Marco Jansen
oh Neesham has picked a wicket. It is not a wicket-taking ball, I tell you. In the slot, on the pads, no change of pace. This can go for a six, but he is early into the shot, and gets a massive leading edge for Salt to catch running towards square leg
