banged in short, pulled hard over square leg, and Royals win with an over to spare!
MI Cape Town vs Royals, 9th Match at Paarl, SA20, Jan 15 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Royals won by 6 wickets (with 6 balls remaining)
9.10pm: That's your lot from us. Thanks as ever for tuning into our live ball-by-ball commentary, and we'll back for more SA20 action tomorrow.
David Miller: "Great performance from the team. To keep them to 158 was a great effort. The spinners did a stirling job. Wellalage did a great job coming in. [Pretorius?] Just the way he plays his shots. He's very free, and his hands are unbelievable. He's an extremely talented young man. Great to have him on our team. [Mujeeb?] Found his lengths really well, and bowling into the wind which helped the batters. Great to have a match-winner like him in our team. [Root at the death?] He's our death bowler now! I gave him the one over and it worked really well. I just felt it was the right call to bowl him all the way through. T20 changes a lot. We've seen in this tournament, you've got to finish the game. It's just about staying in the game as much as possible. It was a big game for us and we knew it. 2 out of 2 at home. Thanks to the supporters out here, we love playing in front of them."
Rashid Khan: "It was pretty close. A few catches dropped early which didn't let us back into the game. We were right there, but just short. I felt the way Rassie batted until the end was brilliant to see, but we were 10-15 short. When Rooty was bowling, we could have taken some chances. 170-175 was a good total to defend... I feel we had some chances in the field we let down which cost us. [Direct hit?] Something which I enjoy the most is fielding. I try to give 100% where I can."
9.03pm: Time for the presentation. Lhuan-dre Pretorius is the player of the match. "[Run-out?] Bat got stuck in the ground. It is what it is. Would have been nice to finish the game off, but we got over the line so I'm happy about that. [Changing room?] Buzzing inside, having a couple of drinks. Keen to join them! [Conditions?] A bit different, under lights this time around. At night it was skidding on a little bit which was nice for me. I think I adapted quite well. [Scrutiny after debut innings?] I'm just speaking to coach Sid about having clarity in my game."
Azfer: "Catches win matches, Pretorius dropped twice in the first over and he goes on to score 83 runs, what would have happened had they taken even just one of those catches?"
8.52pm: Clinical from Paarl Royals on their home ground. They loaded up on spin to restrict MI Cape Town to 158, which looked like a decent total on a tricky pitch. But Lhuan-dre Pretorius made them pay for two early drops before he had scored, clubbing 83 to set up a six-wicket win. They go third in the nascent points table, with their second home win out of two.
full and straight, worked down to long-on
Phehlukwayo at No. 6.
another dead-eye run-out! Hard length, tucked off the hip into the leg side. Esterhuizen chases after it, slides on the edge of the ring as he takes his glove off, and throws down the stumps at the keeper's end with Karthik miles short of his ground on the dive! He's had a tough night with the gloves, but this is a brilliant moment without one of them...
punched down to long-off... Paarl are a hit away
Single figures now.
strays onto the pads, swung away behind square leg! Angling in from around the wicket, but down the leg side, and Miller just helps it on its way
slower ball, cuts Miller in half but Esterhuizen fumbles! Not picked, very close to trimming leg stump, and a misfield by the keeper allows two free runs
13 off 12 is the equation... it should be a cruise from here.
nope, bluffs. Goes short and wide outside off, slapped hard over extra cover as they come back for two
The off-side fielder comes up, with an extra man out on the leg side. Full and straight?
slot ball, launched over midwicket! Poor ball from Boult, angling in towards leg stump and missing his yorker by a fair distance. DK picks it up off his pads and lofts in front of square
yorker, DK gives himself room and slaps out to deep cover as one hand comes off the bat. He's still quick enough to scamper back for a second
slower ball, steered to the man in tight at backward point with an open face
yorker, angling into the pads. Whipped out to deep midwicket
length ball from around the wicket, nudged to short midwicket for a quick single
Rashid is pumped. Superb work from him in the deep. DK walks out at No. 5 to join Miller. 23 needed off the final three.
leading edge skews down to long-off as MIller looks to work leg side. Pretorius scampers back for two... but Rashid Khan's throw from the deep is a bullseye! Superb throw, and Pretorius is a long way short! The dive was a tired effort, with his bat in the wrong hand... but take nothing away from another superb innings from the 18-year-old
full and straight, whipped out to wide long-on and Pretorius races back to the bowler's end as the throw comes in
swung half-hearted out into the leg side, but drops short of wide long-on running in
Yugeesha: "Do we remember the dropped sitters?" -- Looking very costly.
looks to steer away with an open face, but beaten on the outside edge
short-arm jab, flies over fine leg! Offcutter, banged in halfway down. Looks to swing it away behind square and gets enough of it
Trundler: "Why not bowl Potgieter and Brevis? Didn't Potgieter take five wickets a couple of matches ago?"
Niranjan: "to add on to what Chris said, he can not only one of cricket's best attacking batter, as well as he can do the opposite of playing an entire day of a test match......so please don't be loose with the AB comparison"
17 off it, and the required rate is back down to 8s.
goes again, and clears Rashid in the deep! Consecutive sixes, and Paarl are back ahead of the game. Rashid was hovering underneath it, running around to his right from deep midwicket, but it was comfortably past him and into the toblerone on the full. Wide outside off, and hoicked as hard as he could over the leg side, into the wind
monstered onto the grass banks! That sounded like gunshot off the bat. Pretorius is hitting into the wind, but still manages to send this one 95 metres over wide long-on. Down on the slog-sweep and hit with immense power
Still a strong wind blowing in Paarl.
